If you’re new to the custom car world or are looking to get your first auto customized or restored, you may not know where to start. There are so many car shops out there that we thought we’d give you a hand. Here are some of the best custom shops in the nation. With such a small list, we’ve obviously missed some, so tell us your favorites in the comments.

  1. West Coast Customs:

A good place to start when dipping your foot into a new world is with some of the most famous examples. West Coast Customs is a well-known shop with franchises across the world, and we bet you’ve heard at least something about it. This shop was the original site for Pimp My Ride on MTV. It’s now featured on Velocity’s Inside West Coast Customs. This Corona, Calif., shop has done jobs for celebrities like will.i.am and Mark Wahlberg.

  2. SoCal Speed Shop:

Founded by hot rod legend Alex Xydias, SoCal Speed Shop continues to produce high-caliber custom autos. Under President Pete Chapouris, the shop won the 2012 award for America’s Most Beautiful Roadster, one of the most prestigious titles in the world of hot rods. If you’re looking for a track record of success, SoCal Speed Shop has it under its previous name PC3g; one of its most notable cars was a Doane Spencer roadster for Bruce Meyer.

  3. Pinkee’s Rod Shop:

This Colorado shop doesn’t come without its accolades. It’s won the Ridler Award, Goodguys Trendsetter of the Year award, and the Grand National Roadster Show Builder of the Year. Projects include everything from a ’68 Mustang Convertible to a 1940 Willys to a ’56 Ford Wagon. Stop by or contact the shop with your dream car vision to get started.

  4. Barris Kustom:

George Barris has been in the custom car business for more than a half century, gaining nation-wide name recognition by licensing designs to model car manufacturers as well as building full-size cars, many of which were used in film and television productions. Barris industries produced the original TV Batmobile, the Munster Koach, and the truck for The Beverly Hillbillies. Think this shop could do something for you?

  5. Canepa Design:

If you’re looking for more than just roadsters, Bruce Canepa, long-time racing enthusiast and automotive designer, might be the man you’re looking for. Canepa’s shop customizes SUVs, exotic cars, trucks, and semi-trailers, so anything you’re thinking, he and his crew can probably do.
