Thrifty Car and Van Rental has announced which local and national charities it is to support this year; and the lucky two are the NSPCC and Hospiscare. Thrifty has pledged to do what it can to raise as much money as possible throughout 2012 via a wide range of activities including dress down days, raffles and even donating £1 for every rental which goes through its website. Once all donations and money raised have been totted up, the final total will be split equally between the two charities.
Linda Paul, Director of Central Services for Thrifty Car and Van Rental said;
‘Everybody will be getting into the charitable spirit this year by taking part in dress down days and holding raffles. We hope to raise a significant amount of money which will make a huge difference to everyone involved with and benefiting from Hospiscare and the NSPCC.’
Hospiscare is delighted to have been chosen by Thrifty especially because, as a local charity, its profile isn’t as high as some other better known causes. Marc Astley, Hospiscare’s PR and Marketing Officer said;
‘Thrifty has been a wonderful partner and we are extremely grateful they have continued to support our charity. Not only have they raised lots of money, they have also supplied Hospiscare with a number of vehicles to help transport donated items to our chain of shops across Devon.’
Geraldine Harman, NSPCC’s Corporate Business Manager said their charity is equally as delighted to be receiving the much-needed support from Thrifty;

If you’re planning to spend plenty of time in bars and restaurants over the coming months, Santander offers a new way to earn rewards.
In a bid to tempt more customers to take out its 123 Credit Card, Santander is giving borrowers the chance to earn 1% cashback in ‘all major’ bars and restaurants this summer.
This offer is on top of the existing cashback deal, which pays up to 3% depending on your spending habits.
Although there’s a £24 annual fee, it’s possible to avoid this charge if you also take out a particular current account with Santander.
So what’s happening this summer?
The first thing you might want to know is whether transactions in your favourite eating places and watering holes will be eligible for rewards.
While the family-run bistro at the end of your street might not qualify, the list of participating bars and restaurants is certainly extensive.
Among the more well-known are: All Bar One, Carluccio’s, Domino’s, Frankie and Benny’s, La Tasca, McDonald’s, Nando’s, Pizza Express, Pizza Hut, Starbucks, TGI Friday and Wagamama.
However, there are many others – for a more comprehensive list of where else you can earn cashback, check out the PDF on Santander’s website.
The additional cashback offer will run until 30 September 2012.
How else can you earn rewards?
The card also pays 1% cashback on supermarket spending, 2% in department stores and 3% at petrol stations.
As a potential downside, there is a £9 monthly limit on the amount of cashback you can earn on fuel spending.
Whenever you earn cashback, Santander will credit this amount to your next monthly statement.
How do I avoid the £24 fee?
If you take out a 123 Current Account in conjunction with your credit card, Santander will refund your fee for the first year.
This 123 Current Account offers up to 3% cashback if you pay household bills by direct debit and also pays up to 3% gross AER on the money in your account. However, it does come with a £2 monthly fee.

Anything else I need to know?
Whenever you use a rewards credit card, it’s wise to ensure you can pay off the balance in full each month – and this offer is no exception.
If you leave a debt on this card, you’ll pay interest at a rate of 22.8% APR representative, which means these payments could soon wipe off the value of any cashback you earn.
What else is on offer?
The Capital One Aspire World Card pays 5% cashback for the first three months – up to £100. After the initial period has elapsed, you’ll earn up to 1.25% cashback.
With the American Express Platinum Cashback Credit Card, you can also earn 5% cashback in the first three months – up to £100.
Thereafter, you can earn 1.25% on your spending, which is doubled to 2.5% for one month of the year. Beware, however, this card comes with a £25 annual fee.
In a relatively new entry to the rewards card market, Asda has launched a card that pays 1% cashback on shopping in the supermarket and 0.5% on other spending.

With the average victim of theft abroad losing £414, we reveal five of the most common scams.
Some 7% of Brits who have been abroad within the past two years have lost money through theft or fraud, according to research from Sainsbury’s Finance.
On average, the value of these stolen items totals £414 – a sum few of us could afford to lose after paying for a holiday. Perhaps unsurprisingly, cash is the most common target for thieves.
If you’re worried about falling victim to crime abroad, Sainsbury’s research revealed five techniques fraudsters employ to trick tourists.
1. The seat belt fine
If you’re taking a taxi during your holiday and the driver informs you need to pay a seat belt fine, there’s a good chance you’re being set up.
After taking your ‘fine’, the driver may disappear around a corner and pretend to be handing the cash over to an official.
Alternatively, the trick may involve another scammer playing the role of a police offer who collects your cash.
To avoid getting caught out by these types of hoaxes, it might be worth researching local laws in your destination before leaving the UK.
2. The beachcomber
If you’re soaking up the sun on your holiday, you should be especially vigilant for fraudsters who operate on beaches.
Using this trick, a thief observes their potential targets and swoops in to steal their bag and possessions when they go for a swim in the sea.
3. The distraction dupe
Thieves and scammers often work in tandem in order to hoodwink their victims.
As one of the pair distracts you with a false story or by making conversation, an accomplice is busy stealing from your bag or pockets.
4. The bus breakdown
If you’re on a bus that suddenly experiences mechanical problems, you should be on the alert for a possible scam.
With the bus breakdown con, the driver will stop the vehicle in some deserted location and insist the passengers pay an additional fare to be collected by a second bus.
5. The note switch
When handing over your cash in a bar or taxi, keep an eye open for the note switch trick.
Criminals may accept a large note, swap it for a smaller denomination and then claim you have underpaid.
Admittedly, it can be difficult to get to grips with a new currency when you’re travelling. However, few of us would readily hand over more cash if this situation arose in the UK, so don’t be duped on holiday.
Where you’re most at risk
According to Sainsbury’s data, scams and thefts are most likely to occur in hotel rooms or on public transport.
Other common crime hotspots include tourist attractions, beaches, bars, ATMs, cars and shops.
Will travel insurance pay out?
Most travel insurance policies are designed to cover you against losses that result from crime, but there are a number of ways you could inadvertently invalidate your policy.
If, for example, you have consumed excessive amounts of alcohol at the time of the crime, the insurer may decide you have taken an unjustifiable risk and refuse to cover your claim.
Many insurance companies also require you report any incident to the local police within a set time period – often 24 hours. If you fail to meet the deadline, you may be unable to claim.
Of course, we’re not trying to put a damper on your holiday plans. As long as you’re sensible, there’s no reason you should fall prey to any of these scams – just remember to be on your guard as you’re lounging in the sun.

More than three million Brits will risk breaking the law overseas this summer. Will you be one of them?
An estimated 10 million people will drive their cars abroad this summer, research conducted by car insurer AXA has revealed.
More than one in three of these motorists will risk breaking the law in ways they wouldn't do at home.
Some 27% of those surveyed said they’re less concerned about speeding when they’re abroad and 18% said they take drink driving less seriously on holiday.
Before you head overseas this summer, there are a number of things you can do to ensure your trip goes as smoothly as possible.
Ensure you’re covered
Have a look at your car insurance policy to see whether you’re covered for driving abroad.
Not all insurance policies cover this, but you can often pay a one-off fee to add this extra cover.

Enclosed inside a new policy released in the issue of April 2011 of Pediatric medicine, fathers and mothers are advised to keep their children within a rear-facing infant car seat up till the age of two or better still when they have gotten to the required height and also body weight for their specified seat. Also, the AAP also reminded parents about the basic requirement for their children to use booster seats that seat belt positioned until the height of 4' and 9" in height as well as reaching the ages of 8-12 years of age.
A previous policy published in 2002 also advised that it is much safer for toddlers and infants to be placed in a rear facing up position up to the limits of the car seat, also indicating age 12 months and 20 pounds as absolute minimum. Noticeably, a huge percentage of parents were observed changing their child's car seat position to a front facing one from rear-faced position upon their babies turning one.
"Transition from one stage to another often gets parents excited, but these transitions must generally be delayed until they are absolutely necessary, as the child fully develop and outgrows the restrictions for his or her present stage," said Dennis Dubin, MD, FAAP, leader and author of the policy statement as well as the accompanying technical report.
"A rear-facing child safety seat does a better job of supporting the head, neck and spine of infants and toddlers in a crash, because it distributes the force of the collision over the entire body," dr durbin said. "with larger kids, a harness fitted forward facing seat is a lot safer than booster seats, and a belt positioning booster seat gives the most protection possible than just a seat belt alone until the seat belt can work correctly."
While the rate of deaths in motor vehicle crashes in children under age 16 has decreased substantially, dropping 45 percent between 1997 and 2009, it is still the leading cause of death for children ages 4 and older. Totalling children and teenagers up to the ages of 21 years, over 5,000 deaths are recorded each year. The amount of casualties can be alarming: for every fatality, approximately 18 children get admitted in hospital while more than four hundred are seriously injured enough to need medical assistance.
Results from research made have uncovered the truth that kids are safer in rear-facing car seats. The 2007 journal injury prevention study unveiled that children within the ages of 2 yr were 75% less likely to be killed or obtain very severe injuries in the event of a crash if they are sat in a rear facing manner.
The age 2 recommendation is not a deadline, but rather a guideline to help parents decide when to make the transition, Dr. Durbin said. Smaller children will benefit from remaining rear-facing longer, while other children may reach the maximum height or weight before 2 years of age.
Children must be transitioned from a rear facing car seat to a forward facing car seat that comes with harness for optimal safety, this should continue until they reach the required height and weight. Then a booster will make sure the vehicle's lap-and-shoulder belt fit properly. The correct positioning of the seat belt should be for it to lie across in between the shoulder and the chest rather than laying across the face or the neck- as this can be dangerous in the event of an accident .
While the lap belt on the other hand must fit low and snug on the upper thighs and hips instead of the belly. A number kids will most definitely require a booster seat until they've grown till four feet and nine inches tall as well as being 8 to 12 years of age.

Did you know motorists with certain jobs and first names are more likely to be caught speeding? We reveal Britain’s fastest drivers.
I don’t know about you, but if I met a surgeon called Rupert, I’d probably assume he was a pretty sensible chap who could be trusted to follow the rules of the road.
Likewise, I’d imagine a chartered surveyor by the name of Juliet would be a responsible motorist, but it seems I’d be wrong. In fact, these may be two of the most reckless motorists on the roads.
In order to identify Britain’s speediest drivers, women’s insurers Diamond looked at more than three million motorists to identify the first names and occupations of those most likely to have a speeding conviction.
Some of the results were pretty surprising to say the least.
The worst offenders
Surgeons are most likely to have a speeding conviction, followed by chartered surveyors, area sales managers and commercial chairpersons.
For men, those with the first names of Rupert, Julian and Piers are most likely to receive a fine. Women named Juliet, Susannah, Justine and Deidre have the worst records for this type of offence.

According to Diamond’s data, men named Connor, Terrence and Jake are least likely to have a speeding conviction.
When it comes to the female of the species, women with the names of Paige, Molly and Shannon are most law-abiding motorists.
I wasn’t speeding I swear
Whatever their first name or occupation, it seems men are more likely than women to believe they are the victim of an unjust speeding conviction.
According to research from insurer Saga, male motorists are twice as likely as women to say their speeding fine was unfair. In fact, some 7% of men have challenged a ticket compared with 3% of women.
What does this mean for car insurance?
Luckily for all you Ruperts and Juliets, insurance companies won’t automatically assume you’re some kind of speed demon just based on your first name and then hit you with massive premiums.
However, the issue is somewhat more complicated when it comes to your profession. Statistically, insurers calculate that people who work in certain fields are more likely to be involved in an accident ­– often those who will frequently be driving at busy times of the day.
If you’re using a price comparison site, you could try a number of different options to describe your job and see how this affects the cost of your premiums.
As long as you choose a job title that reasonably fits what you actually do, this is perfectly legal.

Recently a New Jersey father took his young son down to a local river to watch and feed the birds. As he slowed the vehicle in preparation to park it, the boy bolted from the car and headed for the river’s edge. The understandably panicked father also jumped out of the vehicle to prevent his son from falling down the embankment.
