Road Rage, Distracted Driving Common Among Daily Commuters

A surprising poll recently conducted by Harris Interactive for the job-posting and career advice website CareerBuilder.com provided some interesting insight into American drivers and their habits behind the wheel. Not so surprisingly, the results showed that as a whole, drivers in the U.S. are an angry and distracted bunch.

The poll, conducted between May 14 and June 4 of this year, surveyed almost 3,900 motorists about their commutes to and from work. Of those polled, the vast majority (83%) drove to work each day as opposed to using public transportation. The poll excluded those who were self-employed or employed in government jobs.

According to Rosemary Haefner, Vice President of Human Resources at CareerBuilder.com, road rage is most associated with running late and dealing with long, far commutes. In total, 58% of all drivers said they experienced road rage during their commutes to and from work. This doesn't mean drivers with short commutes were immune to road rage, though, just that they were less likely to experience it. In fact, only 37% of drivers with a commute of five minutes or less experienced road rage, while 54% of those with commutes of 10 minutes or less admitted to experiencing road rage.

As surprising as it may seem, 61% of all women surveyed admitted that they experienced road rage at some point while making their daily commute, while only 56% of men admitted to losing their head behind the wheel. Regardless of gender, younger drivers are more prone to road rage than older ones, adhering to the stereotype that the older you get, the more you mellow-out. Approximately 68% of those surveyed between the ages of 25 and 34 years old said they experience road rage, while only 47% of those 55 and above admitted the same.

The weather also factored into a driver's likelihood of experiencing road rage. Nearly 17% of those surveyed said that when the temperatures go up in the summer, they experience road rage less. Only 10% claimed that the added heat of the summer months fueled their fury behind the wheel.

While a significant amount of Americans seem to struggle with anger issues during their commutes, the upside came from the fact that only 9% had actually been involved in to a fight with another driver.

Beyond angry driving, almost one in four commuters (24%) has been in an accident while on their way to work, while just under a third (30%) admitted to texting and driving while on their way to work. All in all, to keep your vehicle out of harm's way, keep calm and focus on driving while commuting — and watch out for those who don't.

Smoking in Cars with Children Called Child Abuse

By Aaron Crowe

For nonsmokers driving with a smoker, slightly cracking open a window to let the smoke out isn’t enough to prevent them from breathing secondhand smoke, according to nonsmoker advocates. It certainly isn’t enough to protect children, they say.

In an effort to protect children from secondhand smoke, the city of Tempe, Ariz., is considering fining drivers who smoke with a child in the vehicle. Police wouldn’t be allowed to stop someone solely for smoking, but if a driver is pulled over for another reason, such as speeding, then they could be cited if they’re smoking and a child is in the car.

If the proposal becomes law, it would be the first in Arizona. Seven states have laws that prohibit smoking with kids in cars: Arkansas, California, Louisiana, Maine, Oregon, Utah, Vermont, along with Puerto Rico. Cities and counties in five other states also have similar laws. Nevada, Illinois and Connecticut are considering similar legislation.

Some laws apply to children under age 8, while others are for smoking in a car with anyone younger than 18. Oregon has some of the stiffest penalties, with a $250 fine for a first offense and $500 for others.

Smoking in a car exposes people “to toxic air that is many times higher than what the EPA considers hazardous air quality, even when a window is down,” according to the group Americans for Nonsmokers’ Rights. The U.S. Surgeon General says there is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke.

More Areas Consider Banning Smoking in Cars With Kids

Banning smoking with children in cars is a “no-brainer,” says Dr. Mary Ann Block, a doctor in Hurst, Texas.

“Smoking in a car where a child is present is child abuse,” Block says. “The dangers of side stream smoke are well known, causing the same serious and life threatening health issues that first line smoking cause,” including cardiovascular disease and cancer.

“An innocent child has no control over this exposure unless someone steps in and makes it illegal,” she says.

VJ Slight, a former smoker and author of “How to Win at Quitting Smoking,” agrees that smoking in a car with children equates to child abuse, but says the secondhand smoke exhaled by the smoker isn’t the main problem, it’s the side-stream smoke that comes off the tip of the cigarette.

“The smoke is formed at a lower temperature, which causes more cancer-causing chemicals to be created versus the smoke that is inhaled by the smoker,” Sleight says.

When the smoker inhales, the smoke is taken in at a higher temperature because oxygen is being pulled through it and it’s then filtered by the cigarette filter and the smoker’s body, she says.

“Children are more affected by smoke because they are still developing,” Sleight says. “Children exposed to side-stream smoke are more prone to ear and respiratory infections including pneumonia and bronchitis, wheezing and coughing, (which) triggers asthma attacks, and for infants they can be at risk for sudden infant death syndrome.”

A Bigger Goal

The bigger issue with these bans and proposed laws is that they’re meant to drive smokers underground more while giving them fewer places to legally smoke, ultimately leading to preventing people from smoking in their homes, says Theodore King, the Oklahoma state coordinator for the Citizens Freedom Alliance, a smokers’ rights group.

“It’s tyranny,” says King, author of “The War on Smokers and The Rise of The Nanny State.”

“If they want to pull you over with your kid in your car, they will safely assume that the kid is in your house and that you probably smoke in your house,” he says.

One of the ultimate goals behind these laws is to collect a smoker’s name and address, and later send a representative from Child Protective Services to the home and determine that the home isn’t safe for the child to live in, King says.

“Basically, it’s trying to get into your house,” he says.

Smokers have fewer and fewer places where they can smoke legally, King says. Public parks, beaches, courthouses, and outside patios at bars and restaurants ban smoking in some cities. The University of Kentucky bans smoking on its campus.

Even in Arizona, where a hot summer day can cause a smoking driver to blast the air conditioning and not roll down a window, secondhand smoke is something that King, 46, and others lived with as children, he says.

“This thing is not the monster that people make it out to be,” King says.

Advanced Defensive Driving: Take it to the Next Level

Defensive driving means being in control at all times.

Defensive driving means being in control at all times. (image by gabor-nagy.com)

According to the National Safety Council, a preventable accident “is one in which the driver failed to do everything that reasonably could have been done to avoid the crash.” Experts agree that driving defensively is your best bet at making sure a crash, collision, or accident doesn’t happen to you. We’ve already discussed the basic concepts behind defensive driving, which include scanning and visualizing everything, having an escape route, and not becoming distracted. Now let’s consider some more advanced, preventive measures a responsible driver can take to avoid a potentially life-threatening crash.

Maintain Your Car

Regular maintenance on your car significantly helps its road performance, especially in potentially hazardous driving situations. You can’t drive a car defensively if its tires are in need of air, windows, rearview mirror, and signal lights are dirty, and brake pads are worn to shreds. Here are a few steps you should take to keep your car running safely and efficiently:

 • Check Your Tires Make sure your tire pressure is where it should be. The recommended pressure for your car’s tires will be in your owner’s manual or in the driver’s side door jamb. When it comes to purchasing new tires, take into account the weather in your part of the country. Four snow tires total is the safest way to go if you anticipate driving in snow and ice.
 • Align Your Tires If while driving your car seems to drift to one side or the steering wheel vibrates, you may need to have the tires aligned. Alignment actually refers to a car’s suspension, which can move out of alignment over time due to normal driving, a minor accident, or bumping against a curb. Check your owner’s manual to see how often your car’s manufacturer recommends aligning your car’s tires. Alignment helps to insure better handling, which is crucial for good defensive driving, as well as better gas mileage.
 • Clean Your Car A dirty windshield or rearview mirror will prevent you from scanning and visualizing the road for potential dangers. And grimy signal lights or head lights will prevent other drivers from seeing you in bad weather or at night, which pretty much negates any effort you make to be a good defensive driver.
 • Change Your Brake Pads If when braking, you hear squeaking or grinding, your brake pads may be worn out and in need of replacement. Knowing how and when to brake, especially in inclement weather, is a crucial skill for defensive driving. If you have an antilock brake system and need to stop in on an icy road, stomp on the pedal and when you feel the system’s pulses or hear it working, ease up a bit on the pedal until it’s only pulsing about once a second. If you don’t have ABS, you should push the brake hard and when the wheels stop turning, lift your foot so the wheels turn and rapidly press the brake again.

Other Advanced Defensive Driving Tips

 • Yield, Move, Get Out Of The Way Driving defensively for the most part involves avoiding overly aggressive drivers. It may be frustrating to just step aside in order to give a bad driver room to do whatever they want, but it is the safest thing to do, not only for yourself but for everyone else on the road. When you encounter a speeding driver pressuring you to go faster, move into another lane, even if it means going slower. As a defensive driver, accept the fact that you may have to sacrifice your right of way in order to avoid a speeding ticket or collision.
 • Plan a Route To avoid a time-consuming and potentially dangerous drive, plan out your route out in advance based on current weather, traffic, and road conditions. Local websites, radio, and even iPhone apps can provide you with the information you need before you hit the road and find yourself navigating road construction or an end-of-the-week traffic jam.
 • Take a Course There’s nothing wrong with taking a driving course to brush up your skills, even if you’ve been driving for years. The AARP even offers a very inexpensive driver safety course in both classroom and online environments. Check with your agent to see if completing a driving course will give you discount on your car insurance or on roadside assistance plans.

Six scam warning signs

Con artists operate in every walk of life, but could you spot a scam?

Working as a personal finance journalist can make you jaded at a pretty young age as you’re constantly hearing tales of people who have been fleeced or hoodwinked.

However, it’s difficult not to be cynical when you examine the facts. According to figures from the Cabinet Office, 56% of people have been targeted by online criminals – with the average victim losing £247. Scarier still: internet fraud is just one type of scam and there are countless other ways you could be caught out.

If you’ve been contacted about a deal that seems too good to be true, chances are you should trust your instincts. Here are six telltale signs that you’re dealing with a scammer.

1. You receive a cold call

If you’re contacted out of the blue by a company that claims its services could make you filthy rich, it’s wise to be on the alert. If an opportunity were really that good, seasoned investors would be queuing up to get in on the deal – the company won’t need to make unsolicited calls.

2. You’re asked to pay fees upfront

This type of fraud is known as an ‘advanced fees scam’ and should be treated with extreme caution. If you’re informed that you have won a prize but can only claim after paying a fee, it’s prudent to be on your guard.

Be especially vigilant if you’ve never heard of the company before and have no recollection of entering the competition. Have you ever heard of someone who has legitimately bagged a fortune in a situation like this? Thought not!

Also watch out for anybody who asks you to provide your banking details over the phone or via email.

3. No permanent office

Companies without a permanent address are inevitably more difficult to trace if something goes awry.

If a company provides you with a mobile phone number or PO Box, the Citizens Advice Bureau advises you to check its details with Companies House or do some additional research to ensure it’s a legitimate business.

Likewise, you should also be wary of any company based overseas as these can be more difficult to trace.

4. The company isn’t regulated

Before entering into a contract with any business, it’s wise to check it is registered with the relevant bodies. For instance, reputable financial companies should be listed on the Financial Services Authority (FSA) register.

If you’re especially concerned about a particular business, you could check this list of unauthorisesd firms that the FSA warns customers against.

5. Poor spelling and grammar

Not to be pedantic but errors on a website, in emails or letters are often a warning sign that something is amiss.

Legitimate companies should take care to appear professional and hire someone with a decent standard of English to produce their written content.

Although this isn’t always the case, it’s a pretty reliable yardstick as far as scams are concerned.

6. Ssshhh! It’s a secret

Scammers may claim to be privy to inside knowledge in order to tempt you to invest in a product that turns out to be fraudulent – either non-existent or worthless.

The scammer may also ask you to keep the investment a secret. Would a properly regulated broker or investment firm really behave in such an unprofessional manner?

The real reason fraudsters ask you to keep the call a secret could be that they’re worried that you’ll discuss the matter with someone who will clue you into the fact it’s a scam.

How To Get The Best And Affordable Van Insurance Cover For You A

Investing in vans or similar vehicles has resulted in many businesses doubling or even tripling their profits because of the role these vehicles play. No matter the type of vans employed in the running of a business, the law requires that every vehicle must be covered with an up to date insurance policy before being driven on the roads or used for any business activity.

Getting the right insurance coverage for a van can become extremely expensive for businesses, especially those requiring fleet insurance for their numerous vans. So what are the most effective ways for lowering van insurance costs?

Whether renewing your current policy or buying a new policy, one of the most efficient ways for lowering your premium is to take the time out to compare different quotes from insurers. In this day and age, the way we search for information has been greatly influenced by the advent of the internet, and so provide the best place to begin your search for the least expensive van insurance quotes.

Take Time Out To Begin Your Research Online

The days of painstakingly calling and dealing with several insurers at a time to compare quotes are now over. Comparing quotes one by one is a boring and tedious way of getting cheap quotes, but with the use of comparison websites, you can get dozens of quotes within minutes thereby saving you time, energy and money . You would be able to gain access to numerous quotes from different insurers once you complete the form.

However though, not all quotes will be suitable for your needs, you will discover that some insurers will be in a much better position to provide you with a decent level of cover at a low cost rate . Before you completely commit to the insurance quote, it's always advisable to call the insurer and discuss the terms of the policy and to see if you can even get a reduced rate for the policy.

While the net is one of the best places to commence your search, calling the quote provider to lower the quote even further is an ideal strategy to getting the cheapest premium possible. It's a great way to discover exactly what's contained within the policy cover you're buying and, most importantly, what they do not include. After giving the insurance company any new information regarding your policy, they should now be in a much better state to give you their final quote.

Discuss Your Policy In Detail By Phoning The Insurer

Van insurance being a specialist type of insurance cover can be rare in comparison to all other known insurance. Not every insurance company would offer cheap policies, in particular competitive premiums. Often times, motorists prefer to go with the easy option by dealing with previous insurers they used in the past instead of trying new insurance companies. Nonetheless, if you're serious about obtaining cheaper premiums you might just want to go deeper.

Being satisfied with your current insurer doesn't mean you cannot go out there looking for better bargain premiums, there's a lot to be gained by shopping around and comparing quotes. Not a lot of motorists understands that finding cheap quotes can be inexplicably very easy, what ever type of approach you adopt in finding bargain insurance quotes, your desired outcome is within your grasp.

Getting a cheaper quotation from an insurer, you can persuade other insurance companies you approach to beat that particular quote thereby making your premium even cheaper on the long run. Insurance companies are in no obligation to change the quote they've given you, when approached most will categorically decline your request, but it's just a good way of establishing a medium of communication between you and the prospective insurer.

Proposed Changes To Your Coverage

Bare in mind that your utmost goal is to lower your premium quiet considerably, so you should decide what part of your policy is needed and what's not, in order to maintain a balance between reasonable premium and adequate cover. Some policies might include other products you really do not need, for instance, step up cover, protected no claims bonus (PNCB), personal injury cover, third party injury cover, European cover, legal expenses cover and so on. There is no need allowing them in your policy when you do not need them.

Obtaining a cheap van insurance premium entails taking out any unwanted extras withing the policy so you can pay for what you require only- thereby saving you money. Don't go increasing your level of excess by an insane amount, just make sure you aren't paying for unwanted add- on. Getting rid of all the unwanted optional extras from your policy will help you save loads.

In a nutshell, you cannot discover cheap van insurance quotes or premiums if you do not take out time to commit towards finding it. Irrespective of you conducting researches that involves you calling your prospective insurer or getting quotes from numerous insurers, there are many different choices you could make to get you the right outcome.

Insurance for van is a little more of a specialist type of cover than car or even home insurance. Unfortunately, not all insurers can provide cover, in particular competitive premiums. Many a times, we avoid trying newer things instead, we stick with what we’ve been accustomed to, like getting quotes from the same insurer we’ve been with for ages . However, if you’re serious about reducing your premium you must to go the extra mile.

No matter how contented you may be with your current premium or insurer, it still pays to shop around to get even better bargain. Irrespective of the manner you search for a cheaper deal, using van insurance comparison sites or approaching individual insurers directly or through their websites, discovering discount quotes can be pretty straight forward.

If you are able to source a cheaper quote you can use that information to approach your current insurers (or indeed any others that you’re interested in) and discuss their competitor’s sites. These insurers are under no pressure to change their quotation, some might not even consider changing it, it simply establishes a medium of at least communication with the added chance of reducing your premium even further without amending your policy.

Confirming Your Policy

At this critical stage before your policy acceptance, you will be in a better position to figure out what’s best to retain or discard with your policy in order to keep your premium at a low. Typically, insurers would like to cross sell you on other insurance packages like legal expenses cover, personal injury cover, European cover and lots more. But, there isn’t any point buying any of these package when you really do not need them.

A policy thoroughly examined to strip of any unwanted extras and left with only the primary cover and protection needed. Don’t go increasing your level of excess by an insane amount, just make sure you aren’t paying for unwanted add- on. Getting rid of all the unwanted optional extras from your policy will help you save loads.

The bottom line though is when it comes to reducing van insurance premium you’ll need to be prepared to do some work. Whether that’s researching alternative providers online or phoning your current insurer to see if they can remove any unnecessary baggage, there are plenty of options to help you get the right result.

Weir expects fall in oil and gas orders to continue

Weir Plc said orders from its oil and gas business fell 23 percent in the first quarter, a smaller drop than was expected by the market, sending its shares up as much as 5 percent. The Scottish industrial engineering firm, which expects the decline in orders to continue in the second quarter, said it would cut costs at its oil and gas segment by another 10 million pounds ($15.35 million). Companies serving the oil and gas industry have been feeling the pinch as exploration and production majors slash spending in response to the steep fall in crude prices. Weir, which makes valves and pumps for the energy and mining industries, plans to cut another 125 jobs, mostly in its North American oil and gas business, and consolidate its service centres in the region, Andrew Neilson, Director of Strategy and Corporate Affairs told Reuters.

How To Insure Your Car Modifications

By Aaron Crowe

Modifying your car can be a personal statement and a lot of fun, if you can afford it.

From stereos and entertainment systems to custom wheels, paint jobs and hydraulics that can bounce your car into the air, it can be easy to spend thousands of dollars on customized parts and equipment.

Getting those modifications insured, however, can be difficult and require additional coverage that will likely be limited.

And, just to be clear, when talking about car modifications, we’re talking about legal ones that insurance companies will at least consider covering. Illegal modifications, such as HID headlights and undercarriage lighting, aren’t covered.

Other modifications, such as lifting the suspension or frame and body, may be limited in height by state regulations. Some states measure by maximum headlight and taillight heights and others measure by maximum bumper heights.

Pennsylvania, for example, doesn’t allow front lift blocks to raise a vehicle’s height, and rear lift blocks can’t exceed five inches over original equipment. New York doesn’t have suspension lift limits.

Some modifications may not be covered because they’re not permanently attached to the car and can be easily stolen. Adding sub-woofers to the trunk that aren’t screwed in could mean no coverage if they’re stolen because they’re technically not part of the vehicle.

$4,000 in coverage

Auto insurer Esurance sells policies that offer up to $4,000 in coverage for customized parts and equipment that are damaged or need to be replaced. These include:

 • Stereo and television equipment.
 • Radios, citizen band radios and scanners.
 • Personal computers, Internet access and navigation systems.
 • Body, engine, exhaust or suspension enhancers.
 • Custom grilles, spoilers.
 • Custom wheels, tires, or spinners.
 • Custom chrome and paint.
 • Special carpeting or insulation.
 • Furniture or bars.
 • Height-extending roofs.
 • Custom murals, paintings or other decals or graphics.

Its standard policy only covers original equipment included by the manufacturer, and customized parts must be part of any additional insurance coverage. Some states may require buying comprehensive and collision coverage in order to get customized parts and equipment coverage.

Extras installed by the dealer, such as a better stereo than what comes with the base model of a car, should be covered by a regular policy, says Keith Going, director of insurance relations for Carstar, an auto body repair business. The thinking is that the customer will argue that the “extra” was part of the car’s original equipment and should be covered by the manufacturer if damaged, Going says.

It’s still a grey area worth checking with your insurance agent, says Going, who previously worked in the auto insurance industry, because some insurers will put a $1,500 cap on after-market modifications.

“Many people do not have that dialog with their agent,” he says, and are surprised by what isn’t covered by their insurance.

“They’re just not aware, in many cases, of what their policy covers and doesn’t cover,” Going says.

When checking with an insurance agent, some will want to know not only what the modification is, but how it will be used, says Todd Balderson, owner of Balderson Insurance Agency in Silver Spring, Maryland. For example, is it for speed and increasing the performance of the car or motorcycle?

Insurance companies may also want to know who is doing the work and their qualifications, Balderson says.

“If it is your buddy down the street, you may find yourself with an uninsurable vehicle,” he says.

Higher coverage

Adding $4,000 in coverage isn’t much if you’ve spent double that on new rims, a stereo system and paint job. To get extra coverage, you can go to a collector car insurance company such as Hagerty or Grundy that specialize in custom and collectible cars.

A modified car doesn’t have to be a classic car such as a ’57 Chevy that’s only driven on weekends, or hauled on a trailer to classic car shows. A modified Honda Civic, which is one of the most popular cars to modify, can get extra coverage through a company such as Hagerty.

The company doesn’t limit how much the modified car is driven, though how much they’re used helps in determining an insurance rate.

It considers a vehicle to be modified if its performance has been significantly increased, or the body, chassis or frame have been structurally altered, or a custom paint job cost more than $10,000.

Drivers may not want extra coverage

Car owners who have added turbochargers, nitrous oxide injection systems and other ways to amplify engine power may not drive fast and recklessly, as the stereotype may dictate. Instead, they may not drive it much, keep it in a garage or other safe place, and take care of regular maintenance.

Those qualities can help get a better insurance rate. Even so, they may not get extra insurance for their vehicle modifications because they either think it’s too expensive or just don’t think of it.

“Many of them, they just don’t get the extra coverage,” says Paul Nadjarian, founder of Mojo Motors, which helps people find used cars to buy.

Some may only take their modified cars to car shows in a trailer, and feel an anti-theft device is enough to keep it safe, Nadjarian says.

“Some of these folks, they just don’t care,” he says of adding insurance.

Others may assume they’re covered by their normal insurance policy, says Carstar’s Going of young drivers with a second, modified car on their policy, along with a first car that isn’t modified that they drive regularly.

“They just don’t know that ‘I’m supposed to call my insurance company because I just upgraded from a $200 stereo system to a $1,500 system.’ A lot of times they think they’re covered, but they’re not,” Going says.

The bottom line: Check with your insurance agent before making any car modifications to see if you’re covered.

How to save an extra £50 a month

What would it take to make you happy? For some of us, it could be as simple as saving £1.66 per day.

£1.66… it doesn’t sound like a particularly earth-shattering sum, does it? In fact, it’s the kind of loose change you often find rattling around at the bottom or your bag or collecting dust on the mantelpiece.

However, some 9 million Brits would feel happier with their lot if they were able to put aside this amount every day, which would equate to £50 over the course of a month.

This is according to research from government savings arm NS&I, which also found that 62% of Brits are dissatisfied with the amount of savings they have.

With this in mind, we’ve rounded up some tips that could potentially help you save. You’re probably not going to attempt them all, but taking up just one or two could help you hit that £50 target.

Save on showers

Following a recent spate of price hikes, the topic of energy bills is a huge source of concern for households across the UK. Luckily, there are numerous ways you could slash your energy bill with minimal effort.

You could, for instance, replace your traditional showerhead with a water-efficient model. According to the Energy Saving Trust, this could save the average family of four around £72 a year on water heating and another £78 on water bills.

Once you factor in the £27 cost of the showerhead, that’s an annual saving of £123 or just over £10 per month. While it doesn’t exactly meet the £50 target, it’s a decent start.

Remember this tip only applies if your shower currently takes water directly from your boiler or hot water tank.

POTENTIAL MONTHLY SAVING: Around £10 or higher if you also try other tips.

Stop wasting food

According to research from the Waste and Resources Action Programme, the average family with children wastes 680 a year on food. Doing the maths, that’s almost £57 per month.

Check out Stop wasting £680 a year on food for tips on how you could save.

POTENTIAL MONTHLY SAVING: Almost £57

Cut the interest on your debt repayments

If you’re currently paying expensive interest on your credit card, you might able to save money with a 0% balance transfer card as these products won’t charge any interest during an introductory period.

Imagine you have a debt of £2,500 and are paying interest at a rate of 20%, you would be paying £38 in interest alone this month.

With a balance transfer card, you could avoid these interest payments during the 0% period and focus on paying down your debt.

Just one word of caution – most lenders charge a one-off fee if you would like to transfer a balance onto a card and it’s wise to take this in account.

POTENTIAL MONTHLY SAVING: Depends on your level of debt

Ditch the vending machine

By now, you’re probably sick of being told how much money you could save by taking a packed lunch into work every day, but have you considered how much you spend on snacks?

Say you buy two cans of cokes and a bar of chocolate from the vending machine every day, you could easily be spending £1.66. Ditch this habit and you could potentially save £50 a month.

POTENTIAL MONTHLY SAVING: £50

We can’t promise eternal happiness, if you follow our money-saving tips. However, you might be able to put a little extra into your savings each month and perhaps feel a little less financially frustrated.

New tyre labelling regulations for 2012

Compulsory EU tyre labelling will come into effect in November of this year. The labelling system will show buyers the fuel economy and wet weather braking capabilities and noise levels of tyres. This tyre performance labelling could have an effect on the way in which we purchase tyres and the brands we choose.

Labels will rate tyre performance on a scale of A-G, similar to the scaling labels used on things such as domestic appliances. Therefore, customers will be able to see at a glance whether the tyre scores highly on performance. However, there is one area which cannot be rated on such a simple scale- tyre longevity. The conditions of use, wear and tear will ultimately determine this, but at least drivers will have some indication as to the quality of their tyres.
