How to Get Cheap Car Insurance

Are you the type of person who believes all car insurance policies are the same? Do you refuse to believe those who try to tell you how you can actually get cheap car insurance? If you answered “yes” to either of these questions you are exactly the type of person this article is intended for. We want you to know that cheap car insurance is indeed possible. We also want to help you find out how to get it.

For starters, please understand that insurance is an industry in which everything is open to negotiation. Very rarely do you have to settle for the first price quoted you by any single provider. With the right leverage and a bit of negotiating skill you can convince most insurance agents to significantly reduce your price over the initial quote. You just need to know what it is you’re looking for and how to push their buttons.

How to Get Cheap Car Insurance

How to Get Cheap Car Insurance

Before you even start looking for quotes consider the following questions:

  • What are the liability requirements in my state?
  • Does my bank require me to carry comprehensive and collision coverage?
  • Do I want extra things like full glass and roadside assistance?
  • Can I afford to pay the entire policy premium upfront?
  • What do my driving history and credit look like?

Obtaining Quotes

The first three questions listed above are extremely pertinent when you start asking for quotes. Whether you use an online quote tool or speak to a representative in person, you’ll need to know what liability requirements are in your state and whether or not you want to increase them for your own protection. If you’ve already determined the minimum liability is sufficient don’t let the insurance representative convince you otherwise.

In terms of collision and comprehensive coverage, you really need to know this before you get started on the quote process. That’s because there is little negotiating room here. If your bank requires you to carry it your premiums will be determined by the value of the car you drive. On the other hand, extra coverages can be used as negotiating chips in order to keep the price down.

Negotiating with Insurance Companies

With multiple quotes in hand you’ll have to narrow them down to your top two or three choices. Then get on the phone and talk to an agent with the sole purpose of convincing the individual to give you a better rate. This is where the last two questions from above come into play.

For example, if you can afford to pay for an annual policy up front you can use that as leverage to bring the price down. Insurance companies love upfront payments because it gives them more cash to invest. If you can’t afford to pay the entire bill, negotiate quarterly or monthly installments that will fit your budget. And never accept unnecessarily high installments fees for the privilege of doing so.

Lastly, your credit history and driving record play a big part in your insurance rates. If you have blemishes on your record be prepared to answer questions about them when you’re talking to the agent. You can still get cheap car insurance if you negotiate firmly but politely. Remember to always be honest and forthright when answering direct questions about your driving history.

It might help to know that most states prohibit car insurance companies from denying policies based solely on credit history. So if you suspect that to be the case, be prepared to show the agent a copy of the law. That should change things instantly.

Your biggest wastes of money

Buying flashy cars and not planning for the future are just a couple of mistakes people make with their finances.

Unfortunately, there is quite a gap between what people would like to do with their money and what they actually do. For many, buying a house, taking trips with family or even retiring may present difficulties if drastic changes aren’t made in spending and saving habits.

Financial planning is vital for attaining realistic goals. Investing for the future should be a regular habit.

Here are some common financial mistakes that people make.

Not paying bills on time

Many people look at credit cards as a means to improve their lifestyle. So the end of the month rolls around and you receive that dreaded envelope in the post from your credit card company.

If you've ever paid a bill late, you will have probably noticed that you're charged a fine.

Brushing aside your bill or ignoring it all together could be detrimental to your credit rating and cost you more through the interest payments.

Trying to make an impression

Just because your neighbour has a flashy new TV, doesn’t mean you need to get one.

Buying for status is perhaps one of the worst financial mistakes. There is no evidence to prove that impressing others with a fancy car can make you happier. In fact, the debt you take on while acquiring these assets could prove to be costly. Never think about what others have as there are financial consequences of buying more than you need.

Overusing credit cards

Time and time again cards are used to purchase the smallest of things – from a loaf of bread to a packet of crisps.

The cost of the items you have charged becomes the purchase price plus interest. Before you know it, you’ll have filled the car up with petrol, bought a new duvet cover and have acquired the entire Monty Python DVD box set. Next time you make impulsive purchases, ask yourself if what you are buying is worth the interest.

Not planning for the future

Taking control of your spending and managing your money can help pave the way to achieving financial goals.

Failure to plan ahead can be a result of inexperience or may even be attributed to ignorance and fear. Although you may not want to face the future, it is just around the corner and without significant planning, you will find life much more difficult.

Lack of life insurance and health insurance could leave you in a difficult situation if problems were to arise. After all, life insurance is an asset for an individual.

Acting as a guarantor

Those of you with good credit may sometimes be tempted to guarantee a tenancy agreement or mortgage for a friend or family member with a history of financial problems.

But be prepared for what this implies. When you guarantee a mortgage or tenancy agreement, you’re taking on a risk that a professional lender or letting agent won’t take. If they can’t repay the debt, then you will be responsible for it. You may be better off staying away from playing the sugar daddy or a good Samaritan and keep your financial records on track.

Few Tips That Could Save You A Fortune On Your Van Insurance Bill

The use of vans in businesses cannot be over-emphasized, hence, they play a pivotal role in the daily activities of every business.  Irrespective of whatever services or business operations vans are used for, whether moving goods from one location to another or used for carrying building tools and machinery, all vans must be protected by an up to date van insurance policy.

Due to the expensive nature of certain insurance policies, a huge majority of small businesses now underinsure their vans in order to save money on their policies. Below are some few tips and tricks that will help you obtain that elusive cheap van insurance quotes you've been searching for.

If you're looking to renew the current policy or wanting to buy a new one, you can increase your chances of finding a cheaper premium by conducting research that would help you unveil the cheapest and best quote for you or your business.  The net has changed the way we search for data and information on this basis offers the ideal starting point for all reseach to be conducted.

Research Online and Save Time and Money

Typically, not a lot of individuals and businesses posses the time and patience to be calling insurers one by one to obtain quotes with the view of saving money on their premium. Using the services of a van insurance comparison website is an ideal way of saving you time and money because they compare quotes from dozens of van insurance companies to bring you the cheapest quotes. What you'll need to do is complete the form on the site as accurately as possible and then see and go through live quotes from hundreds of other insurers within a few minute.

However though, not all quotes will be suitable for your needs, you will discover that some insurers will be in a much better position to provide you with a decent level of cover at a low cost rate . Armed with your chosen quote, it's time to call up the insurer to discuss details of the policy and to see if you can get an even further reduction on your premium. There is no harm in trying.

Calling the insurer after settling for your chosen quote to see whether they can reduce it further is the best way to obtain the best deal possible.  It's an ideal opportunity for you to determine what is contained within the policy you're buying and what is not in it. After giving the insurance company any new information reagarding your policy, they should now be in a much better state to give you their final quote.

Phone Up Your Insurer To Discuss The Policy

Insurance for van is a little more of a specialist type of cover than car or even home insurance. Not every insurance company can offer you competitive quotes. Most times motorists just prefer to take the easiest option by settling for what they've been used to, in particular, things they've been familiar with in the past . Nonetheles, if you're serious about obtaining cheaper premiums you might just want to go deeper.

Being contented with your current premium does not really stop you from shopping around and obtaining a cheaper quote elsewhere. Finding cheap van insurance quotes can be extremely very easy no matter what means of search you implore- a number of motorists often prefer comparison websites while others prefer to approach individual insurer one by one.

You can easily use a cheaper quote to obtain a more cheaper premium by using it to approach another insurer so they can try and offer you a much lesser quotation- it's been one of the oldest trick in the insurance industry. Really, they are not obligated to change their quote, and majority of insurers will not bulge, but it gives a great way of opening the lines of communication and opening the possibility of lowering your premiums without changing policy.

Verifying Your Policy

Bare in mind that your utmost goal is to lower your premium quiet considerably, so you should decide what part of your policy is needed and what's not, in order to maintain a balance between reasonable premium and adequate cover. Typically, insurers would like to cross sell you on other insurance packages like legal expenses cover, personal injury cover, European cover and lots more. But, there isn't any point buying any of these package when you really do not need them.

Taking out all unwanted products from the policy before buying is the ideal way to save money on your premium, products like accidental break down cover, legal expenses, third party injury liability, personal effect protection are just a few to keep an eye out for. Increasing your level of excess to an unscrupulous amount can be tempting, but always remember that should you be involved in an accident your insurers would request that you pay up the entire amount before your vehicle can be repaired. Saving a significant amount from your premium can only be attained when you eradicate unwanted optional extras.

Lessons to be learned here is that to get a cheap van insurance premium, you'll have to be prepared to fold your sleaves and dig dirty. Irrespective of you conducting researches that involves you calling your prospective insurer or getting quotes from numerous insurers, there are many different choices you could make to get you the right outcome.

When is a Car Considered “Totaled”?

Recently a New Jersey father took his young son down to a local river to watch and feed the birds. As he slowed the vehicle in preparation to park it, the boy bolted from the car and headed for the river’s edge. The understandably panicked father also jumped out of the vehicle to prevent his son from falling down the embankment. While he saved his son, his vehicle went off the road, rolled down the embankment, and ended up in the water.

The story has a happy ending as far as father and son are concerned, but the vehicle is another story. Although it started right up as soon as police fished it from the water, the owner told reporters he assumed his car insurance company would total it.

His comment raises an interesting question. If the engine runs normally and there appears to be no major structural damage, why would an insurance company total it? To understand that, we must look at some other factors.

What It Means to Be “Totaled”

Before talking about the vehicle and the damage it might have sustained, it’s important to first understand what it means when a car is “totaled.” When a car insurance company uses that designation they are essentially saying the car is a total loss from a financial standpoint. In other words, regardless of whether the owner purchased the cheapest car insurance possible or a top-of-the-line policy, the insurance company has decided they will spend less money to replace it then to repair it.

In most states when a car insurance company totals a vehicle they take ownership of that vehicle once the owner accepts a claim check and cashes it. If the insurance carrier believes it can make a little money by selling the vehicle at a salvage auction they will make arrangements to come and tow it from the customer’s property. If they decide they can’t make any money they will sometimes tell the customer to dispose of it as they see fit. Either way, the car insurance company has the final say.

What May Have Happened

In the case of a New Jersey man, we don’t know exactly sort of damage was incurred by his vehicle. But there are couple of things we can speculate on. First of all, regardless of whether or not he had cheap car insurance we can say that he did have collision and comprehensive coverage; otherwise, the idea of the insurance company totaling the vehicle would be irrelevant. Knowing that, we can look at a couple of things that might have driven the repair costs too high.

If the front end of the vehicle suffered body damage when it hit the river bed, or perhaps dents and dings on its way down the hill, they could result in repair costs of up to several thousand dollars. The insurer must also consider having the engine taken apart and checked for water damage despite the fact the vehicle started right up.

Third, there’s the issue of drying out the vehicle’s interior; this might be the most costly part of the procedure. In order to prevent mold from growing the car’s interior would have to be dismantled, disinfected, and properly dried. That job would probably be worth at least several thousand dollars if the potential water damage was serious.

If you add up the costs of all three types of repair work it’s conceivable a claim could cost the car insurance company $8K-$10K. If the vehicle is more than three or four years old it could be replaced for less money.

Fantastic turnout for Commercial Vehicle Show 2012

Crowds numbered over 16000 at this year’s CV Show, up by 10% on last year’s figures and an impressive feat given the current state of our economic climate, especially as many of those in attendance were buyers.

Show organisers were more than happy with such a fantastic turnout and just what the CV Show 2012 has proved about the commercial vehicle market- it remains sufficiently healthy despite the decline of other industries in the UK, defying economic uncertainty.

These figures also bode well for 2013, when the Commercial Vehicle will also be able to boast official international accreditation. All this seems to promise an even bigger and even better show for next year.

3 Quick Ways to Lower Your Van Insurance Quotes And Premium

Many organizations today cannot do without the use of their vans in their daily business operations.  A current and valid insurance policy is a must have for all vehicles including vans irrespective of their shape, sizes and purpose of use.

Using the services of a van insurance comparison website is an ideal way of saving you time and money because they compare quotes from dozens of van insurance companies to bring you the cheapest quotes. Upon settling for your chosen quote and insurer, endeavor to give the insurer a quick call to discuss and confirm the details of your chosen quote before buying your policy online.

From the new details you've given, the insurers should be able to give you an adjested and final premium based on the new piece of information you've given. http://www.cheapestvaninsurance.org/pay-as-you-go-van-insurance-monthly-van-insurance-1-month-van-insurance.html

Call Up Your New Insurers To Discuss The Policy

In comparison to all other coverage for homes, cars, travel and health insurance, the van insurance is more of a specialist type. Apparently, not all insurance companies are able to returns quotes for specialists type of cover like for van insurance . Most times motorists just prefer to take the easiest option by settling for what they've been used to, in particular, things they've been familiar with in the past . Nonetheless, if you're serious about obtaining cheaper premiums you might just want to go deeper.

Being contented with your current premium does not really stop you from shopping around and obtaining a cheaper quote elsewhere. Whatever means you decide on using for finding cheap van insurance quotes, whether through comparison websites or contacting insurers directly, obtaining cheap quotes couldn't be any easier.

Obtaining a cheap quote from one insurance company is often a good way to get other prospective insurers to beat their lowest quote from a competitor. These insurers are under no pressure to change their quotation, some might not even consider changing it, it simply establishes a medium of at least communication with the added chance of reducing your premium even further without amending your policy.

Refining Your Van Insurance

Now, you should be in a better position to figure out important add-on and non vital stuffs within your policy in order to settle for the best possible premium available. For instance, there might be additional add-on included in your policy that includes: European coverage, third party injury protection cover, legal expenses cover and many more- no need including them in your policy if you don't need them.

A policy thoroughly examined to strip of any unwanted extras and left with only the primary cover and protection needed. Increasing your level of excess to an unscrupulous amount can be tempting, but always remember that should you be involved in an accident your insurers would request that you pay up the entire amount before your vehicle can be repaired. Don't be surprised at how much you would be saving upon disregarding the optional extras.

Lessons to be learned here is that to get a cheap van insurance premium, you'll have to be prepared to fold your sleeves and dig dirty. Irrespective of you conducting researches that involves you calling your prospective insurer or getting quotes from numerous insurers, there are many different choices you could make to get you the right outcome.

What Are Deductibles?

Perhaps you’ve heard people say that one way to reduce your car insurance premiums is to increase your deductibles. But do you know what deductibles are? If not, we’ll explain them here. Needless to say, deductibles are part of the standard auto insurance policy everyone should be familiar with. They play an important role in how much we pay for our policies as well as how much we might potentially have to pay after an accident.

In the simplest terms possible, a deductible is the amount of money the customer is required to contribute in order to pay for repairs to a damaged vehicle. Deductibles apply in the case of collision and comprehensive insurance. So if you have a $500 deductible on your auto policy and you file a $5,000 claim after an accident, your insurance company will only pay $4,500. You will be responsible for the other $500.

It’s important to note that deductibles work on a “first pay” system. In other words, the customer pays the first $500 (or whatever the deductible is) and the insurance company picks up the rest. In some cases a repair shop may require customers to pay their portion before a vehicle will be released; others allow some time for the customer to pay his bill.

Why Deductibles Are Good

Deductibles can be looked at as a good thing for a couple of reasons. The first is the fact that they encourage consumers to shop around for repair estimates before choosing a garage; much the same way they shopped around for car insurance quotes before purchasing a policy.

They aren’t shopping around for the best price, mind you; they’re shopping around for the best quality. As long as it’s going to cost them $500 out of pocket they want a garage that will do the repair the right way. Even though it might cost more the insurance company a little bit more, there’s less of a risk that the consumer will come back with another claim because the first repair wasn’t done correctly.

Deductibles are also good in the sense that they encourage drivers to be more careful behind the wheel. With a significant deductible hanging over their heads they are more likely to drive safely and avoid accidents. That’s good for the individual driver, his car insurance company, and for everyone else on the road.

Why Deductibles Are Bad

Deductibles can be looked at as a bad thing from the perspective of insurance fraud. Unfortunately, garage owners and operators have figured out they can make customers happy by inflating repair estimates to cover their deductibles. In cases where an insurance company makes payments to the customer rather than the repair shop, this type of fraud is very easy to perpetrate. In cases where the insurance company pays the repair shop, it requires a little bit more cooperation between the shop and the customer.

It must be said that the vast majority of repair shops are going to be honest when it comes to estimates and deductibles. But the consumer needs to be aware of the possibility of fraud and make sure he’s not a participant or contributor. Insurance fraud accounts for millions of dollars in car insurance company payouts every year. Drivers who participate are only raising the rates for everyone.

Now that you know a little bit about deductibles you are better prepared to compare car insurance quotes. You can get lower rates if you’re willing to accept higher deductibles in exchange. On the other hand, you might be willing to pay a little more to avoid them.

Out-Of-State Violations May Affect Car Insurance

In the “good old days” it was possible to get a speeding ticket outside of your home state without it affecting your driving record or adding points to your license. In fact, we’ve all heard jokes about paying off the small-town sheriff to satisfy a ticket so the driver could get on his way. Unfortunately, the information age has changed all of that. Depending on your own state laws, and the agreement your state department of motor vehicles has with its counterparts in other states, that speeding ticket you got while on family vacation could come back to haunt you and your previously affordable car insurance.

According to the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators, state and local jurisdictions now cooperate by sharing information electronically through the use of two programs known as the Driver License Compact (DLC) and the Nonresident Violator Compact (NVC). Both of these programs rely heavily on interstate data connections and computer databases to link them and share information.

How It Works in the Field

In all but the smallest and most financially strapped police departments, technology has made it possible to give officers on the road real-time access to database information. It’s no longer uncommon for a police cruiser to have an on-board laptop with a wireless data connection capable of accessing DMV records at any time. That means a driver pulled over outside of his own home state will not likely get by without a police officer knowing about outstanding warrants and other things on his record.

By the same token, if that driver contests the violation in court, that court will have access to his driving record through his own state DMV. The judge will be able to look at that record and render a decision accordingly. If a driver has a long and complicated record the judge may not be too lenient. Keep in mind that all of this is done in real-time using computers with direct access to DMV records.

How It Affects Your Insurance

If there’s any good news in this it can be found in the fact that not all states treat violations from other states the same way. For example, a Colorado resident caught speeding in Nevada may not see the violation show up on his Colorado record. No points will be assigned his license, his insurance company will not have record of the violation, and everything remains the same when the driver renews a policy or looks at new auto insurance quotes. Yet if that same driver is convicted of DWI in Nevada, Colorado will not let that slide.

The Insurance Company Connection

If you’re wondering how car insurance companies find out about violations, it’s actually fairly simple. They are connected to the very same system the state DMVs use; they just have different access. Because they’re lugged in, your insurance company can run a check on your record at any time; most do so on a fairly regular basis. That’s why it’s never a wise idea to hide violations or accidents from your insurance company. They most likely will find out and, in doing so, come to the conclusion that you can’t be trusted. In their mind that means increased risk that could make your cheap car insurance not so cheap any more.

The best way to avoid the question of out-of-state violations is to simply obey the law. If you’re not speeding, you’ll never have to worry about a speeding ticket. Not only will this keep you out of trouble with the local police, it will also keep you in the good graces of your insurance company.

Is Your Child in the Right Seat? Five Common Mistakes Parents Make

Sure, we all want our kids to be safe in the car, but a recent study by General Motors Foundation and Safe Kids USA shows that 73% of car seats are not being used properly. In fact, the risk of fatalities among kids could be reduced by 71% if we’d simply install the right seat the right way in the right place in the car.

The right care seat at the right stage of your child’s growth is very important to car safety.

This becomes even more vital in light of the fact that motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death in children ages 3 to 14. In fact, 500 children are injured and four kids die every day in cars, trucks, and SUVs across the nation.

The bottom line is that babies and children need to ride in a car seat from the time they’re born until they are 7 or 8 years old in most cases. This potentially means that up to four seats per child will need to be researched, purchased, installed, and evaluated until the child is large enough to safely ride sitting in a seat ...

AA’s fight for fair fuel prices backed by government

The government has stepped up to help the AA’s campaign for fail fuel prices by calling on fuel providers to give customers access to daily fuel values- therefore ensuring that blanket prices are marketed across the entire country. The AA hopes that implementing this will ensure that the whole country benefits from lower fuel prices.

It seems that oil price hikes are quickly mirrored at the pumps, but any drop in price takes a long time to filter down to us as consumers- let’s hope this changes following these reforms, as the government has promised to take further action against fuel retailers if new regulations are not adhered to.

Tesco home insurance laid bare after cracks inspection

Despite not claiming on our Tesco Finest Cover insurance, an inspection for cracks affected our premium

Two years ago I bought a Tesco bank Finest Cover home insurance policy. I live in a remote area of the Highlands and wanted insurance I could rely on. In September 2010, I noticed a few cracks on the gable side of my house and called Tesco for advice. It sent a "technical manager" from Glasgow, 220 miles away (a 440 mile round trip). He came out for about 20 minutes, and his inspection of the cracks consisted of a few bangs on the wall with his car keys. The company sent me a report stating that the cracks were "not a result of subsidence or any other peril and, as such, [are] not covered by your building insurance policy". I did not make a claim and did not hear from Tesco again.

Unhappy with this, I paid £420 for an independent local surveyor to do a thorough report. She gave suggestions for repairs which cost me over £1,500. I did not make an insurance claim for any of this.

This year (as I did last), I shopped around for new home insurance, only to find that Tesco has permanently recorded that I have made a subsidence claim, doubling the cost of my home insurance – even though it did not make any payment to me for subsidence. I have asked Tesco to remove this, but it refuses, and now every year I have to pay the extra premium as though I have made a subsidence claim.

Is there anything I can do to get this claim removed? I feel it is preventing me shopping around for my insurance. PJ, Highlands of Scotland

This is a case that has ramifications for anyone else who spots a few cracks in their house. On the face of it, you did seem to have been harshly treated in that you were apparently being penalised with higher premiums, even though you had not made a claim. Inevitably, though, it was more complicated. Tesco says the act of asking it to investigate the cracks constitutes a claim because it paid for a surveyor to come to your home.

Tesco says this was explained to you at the time you rang, though the ramifications were perhaps not entirely spelt out. It says it is duty-bound to record all such incidents on the Claims and Underwriting Exchange (CUE), a central database of incidents reported to insurance companies. It says any insurer who looks at this claim on the CUE system would know it is not a confirmed case of subsidence, "but an investigation and repudiation".

Tesco has sent you a letter setting out the exact position. It says that you can tell any potential insurers that subsidence was investigated but found not to be the case. This should help you when you come to renew your policy.

Meanwhile, the moral of the tale for other homeowners is to get any cracks in your home independently examined before you involve your insurer. As this case shows, any involvement on their part will constitute a claim and be counted against you come renewal. If you had just carried out the investigation and work yourself and not involved Tesco, you would still be paying the old premiums, provided you had made no other claim.

Road Rage, Distracted Driving Common Among Daily Commuters

A surprising poll recently conducted by Harris Interactive for the job-posting and career advice website CareerBuilder.com provided some interesting insight into American drivers and their habits behind the wheel. Not so surprisingly, the results showed that as a whole, drivers in the U.S. are an angry and distracted bunch.

The poll, conducted between May 14 and June 4 of this year, surveyed almost 3,900 motorists about their commutes to and from work. Of those polled, the vast majority (83%) drove to work each day as opposed to using public transportation. The poll excluded those who were self-employed or employed in government jobs.

According to Rosemary Haefner, Vice President of Human Resources at CareerBuilder.com, road rage is most associated with running late and dealing with long, far commutes. In total, 58% of all drivers said they experienced road rage during their commutes to and from work. This doesn't mean drivers with short commutes were immune to road rage, though, just that they were less likely to experience it. In fact, only 37% of drivers with a commute of five minutes or less experienced road rage, while 54% of those with commutes of 10 minutes or less admitted to experiencing road rage.

As surprising as it may seem, 61% of all women surveyed admitted that they experienced road rage at some point while making their daily commute, while only 56% of men admitted to losing their head behind the wheel. Regardless of gender, younger drivers are more prone to road rage than older ones, adhering to the stereotype that the older you get, the more you mellow-out. Approximately 68% of those surveyed between the ages of 25 and 34 years old said they experience road rage, while only 47% of those 55 and above admitted the same.

The weather also factored into a driver's likelihood of experiencing road rage. Nearly 17% of those surveyed said that when the temperatures go up in the summer, they experience road rage less. Only 10% claimed that the added heat of the summer months fueled their fury behind the wheel.

While a significant amount of Americans seem to struggle with anger issues during their commutes, the upside came from the fact that only 9% had actually been involved in to a fight with another driver.

Beyond angry driving, almost one in four commuters (24%) has been in an accident while on their way to work, while just under a third (30%) admitted to texting and driving while on their way to work. All in all, to keep your vehicle out of harm's way, keep calm and focus on driving while commuting — and watch out for those who don't.
