Why the Rolling Stones’ insurance battle matters to mere mortals | James Daley

The Stones’ insurer’s rejection of their $12.7m claim for cancelled concerts following L’Wren Scott’s death shows how tricky full disclosure can be

They may be gods in the world of rock’n’roll, but the Rolling Stones are, it would seem, not untouchable when it comes to dealing with the wolves of the insurance industry. Earlier this week, it emerged that the band is embroiled in an all too common consumer battle against its insurer, which is refusing to pay a $12.7m (£8m) claim for shows that were cancelled on a recent tour.

The Stones cut short the Australian and New Zealand legs of their world tour in the spring after Mick Jagger’s girlfriend, L’Wren Scott, took her own life. While this was just the kind of shock event that the band had bought insurance for, the underwriter pointed to a clause in the small print stating that claims would only be paid if they were due to events that were “sudden and unforeseen”.

Learning a Vehicle’s Past: What to Look for in a Vehicle History Report

No matter how much research or shopping around you do, purchasing a used vehicle always feels like a gamble. If you’re currently in the market for a pre-owned vehicle, there are several factors you definitely need to consider, such as previous maintenance, accidents and more. Sure, you will get some of this information from whomever is coordinating the sale – be it the previous owner or a third-party dealership – but it’s also important to dig deeper than what they are telling you. They are, after all, trying to make a sale, so they may omit any information they think might deter you from making the purchase.

That being said, it’s always a good idea to do a little homework on your own. A great way to gather hard facts about a vehicle’s past is to request a vehicle history report from a reputable organization. The National Motor Vehicle Title Information System provides consumers with a list of approved providers, to help ensure they only get 100% accurate information on the vehicle in question.

However, running a vehicle history report is not enough to ensure you don’t get stuck with a clunker. You also have to understand the data the report is giving you. In an effort to spread awareness, DMW.org provides a free sample report on their website to help people become more familiar with the format. If you feel like you still need some help analyzing the information, read on for some tips on what to look for when you have a vehicle history report done on a potential purchase.

Number of Owners

Any good, worthwhile vehicle history report should include a rough estimate of the previous number of owners. It’s a general rule that the quality of a car goes down the more owners it has. Sure, there are exceptions to this rule, but if a rather “young” vehicle has had a dozen owners, it’s highly unlikely it has been given the care and maintenance it needs to be a top-performer.

Mileage

Another detail included on most reports is the mileage on a vehicle. Sure, you can see this yourself on the odometer if you are purchasing it in person. Yet seeing the build-up over time on the report helps give a more accurate picture of the car or truck’s actual activity over its lifetime. A car owned by a traveling salesman or used by a rental agency will likely have more wear and tear than one used by a person who has a 9-5 desk job.

Accident and Theft Records

The number of accidents should also be noted on the report, along with any records of theft. Both of these details can greatly impact a vehicle’s future performance. For instance, if a vehicle has previously been reported stolen, there’s a chance any number of the parts were tampered with and altered, potentially improperly. The same goes for any repair work done to the car. Sure, it might seem fine, but, depending on how detailed your report is, you will likely have no information on where or who repaired the car or truck, leaving the quality of work done a complete mystery to you. A minor mistake made during a repair five years ago might not be currently causing problems, but over time the quick-fix could wear down and cause more harm than good.

Overview

Obviously the specific details reported will vary by provider, but the three points listed above are pretty standard and should be included on most reports. Scrutinize your vehicle history report with a keen, sharp eye and investigate any discrepancies you find between the data and the story you’ve been told about the car, truck or SUV in question. A little extra work now could potentially save you lots of time and money later.

Top Insurance Tips to Protecting Your Car While Tailgating

Now that we are finally in the wondrous glow of football season, it's time to get out there and see your favorite team in action. But, if you are the type who likes to spend your days (or mornings) tailgating, make sure you are prepared before making your way to the stadium — and I don't just mean bringing enough hamburger patties for the crew, either. Below, you'll find a few helpful tips to make sure you, your vehicle, and your insurance policy are ready:

Make Sure You Have the Proper Coverage

One of the most common mistakes tailgaters make when heading out to the big game is not having the proper coverage for their vehicular pride and joy. Certain policies don't cover non-driving accidents, or personal property stolen from your vehicle. Remember, crashes aren't the only things that can cause significant damage to your car. Even an errant "Hail Mary" from one of your buddies can dent a fender or bust out a window. Also, leaving the game in bumper-to-bumper traffic often results in fender benders and collisions, so make sure your car is has enough coverage in the event you are in an accident leaving the game, too.

Burn Your Hotdogs, Not Your Car

Nothing ruins a day at the stadium quite like watching your trusty tailgate-mobile go up in flames. With that mental image still fresh in your mind, make sure to keep your grill (no matter the size) a safe distance from your car. Lastly, before packing up, make sure all charcoals and embers have gone out (and disposed of properly), and that the grill has had time to cool before you decide to pack it away in the back of your car. And finally, always bring a fire extinguisher, just in case things do go horribly wrong.

Don't Leave Valuables in You Vehicle

So, you've finished your tailgate and are ready to make your way into the stadium for kickoff. But before you go, make sure you have all your valuables on your person, or safely locked in the trunk or glove box. Parking lots are notorious targets for car break-ins and theft, even if the lot is well patrolled. Some auto insurance policies won't cover personal items that are left inside the car, so that's another reason to tote your stuff along or just leave it at home. Lastly, don't forget to lock your car before you rush off to get to the stadium.

Use Common Sense

Beyond big things like not burning your car down to the ground and getting your stuff stolen, there are a number of little things that are easy to forget during you tailgate experience that can result in headaches and frustration. When it comes to indulging and food and drinks, keep them away from your vehicle. Spending time cleaning your favorite pre-game meal out of, or off, your car is no way to spend your pregame. Also, if you plan on running any electronic devices off of your vehicle, or if you plan on using your vehicle's stereo system to jam to your "classic" Jock Jams CD, make sure to bring a pair of jumper cables along in case you run down your battery while pumping up the tunes. And, if you are brave enough to tailgate at an opponent's stadium, make sure not to put too many giant, obnoxious logos of your hometown team on your vehicle, or else you may fall victim to the wrath of an overzealous fan(s).

Don't Drink and Drive

One of the fastest ways to increase your car insurance premium – or even severely injure yourself, your passengers, and others – is to drink and drive. Even if you just get caught leaving the stadium after a few too many drinks, you could be looking at thousands of dollars in fines, not to mention the possibility of losing your license.

I know Tesco is suffering financial hardship, but I didn’t realise it would try to get a little bit extra out of me!

I have had my car insurance with the firm for the past 10 years (with no claims) and let it renew the policy every year. However, this September, when I had a renewal notice at £281.09, I thought I would look on the GoCompare price comparison website. How to Avoid Buying a Flood Damaged Vehicle

Flooded cars can be a nightmare for their owners.

Flooded cars can be a nightmare for their owners. (image via Gawker.com)

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

You’ve driven up to a car dealership. They have a few rows of cars of the specific make and model you’ve been interested in. They are each the current model year or perhaps just a model year behind. They all have low miles, but they’re not “new” cars. And the salesperson just cannot wait to get you into one, your choice of color and options, for a price that seems way below what you were expecting based on your research of the model.

But more than that seems “off” about some of these cars. Some of them seem to smell funny – a bitter, biting and musty smell greets your olfactory system as soon as you open the door, and there’s also a hint of “new car smell” spray and shampoo. In fact, it’s almost as if too much of that spray and shampoo smell has been applied to disguise the musty smells, and they all coalesce into a horrible shock to your senses.

“Don’t worry about that,” says your salesperson. “It’ll be gone in no time.”

Chances are, you might be about to purchase a vehicle that has been flooded.

Before we go further – it is possible to restore and refurbish a car that has been flooded, but it is not for the faint of heart. It requires disassembly of most of the interior, and replacement of all carpets, padding and upholstery. All electrical connections must be replaced. It is by no means a simple undertaking, and it must be done properly for the car to have any serviceable life. And you should know upfront what you’re buying and how detailed the restoration process is, not to mention exactly how the car was flooded. It may have been exposed to water filled with sewage, salt-water or perhaps the windows were down during a torrential downpour. It’s highly unlikely you will ever know.

While some may consider the savings on a flooded car worth the potential risks – just like many do with other automobiles with a salvage title – for most of us, they’re an experience best avoided. Here’s what you need to look for if you believe a car has been subjected to flooding in the past.

Check the Car’s Title.

Your first consideration should be the title. If the car has a clear, rather than a salvage title, make sure the dealership provides you with a vehicle history report based on the car’s VIN from a reputable industry leader, like Carfax, for example.

“Carfax should disclose that if they claim any damage from flooding to their insurance,” said Scott Bratton, a mechanic of 37 years and owner of Auto Check in Katy, Texas.

It is important to note that flood-damaged cars will only have incidents on the vehicle history report if it has been declared a total loss by an insurance company in the past. If the car was not totaled, the title will be clean and the history report may be as well. But the history report is a must, as it is possible for a car to be totaled in one state, and then shipped off to another state where eventually, a clean title is issued for the car.

“I would be concerned if it was a salvaged title. I’d ask why it was salvaged or why it was totaled. That could be due to a flood or a wreck that they went ahead and fixed with cash,” Bratton, whose customers bring in cars to be inspected before they’re purchased, explained. “For the most part I question them about where they’re buying it from. If it’s a Joe Blow lot on the side of the road then I’d really look into how they do business before I deal with them.”

Warning Signs

The musty smell isn’t the only possible hint of a flooded car. Check the car’s lights and reflectors. If they contain moisture, it is possible the car has been submerged. But the real evidence will likely be on the inside of the car.

  • Inspect the gauges on the dashboard. Again, moisture or other residues are what you are looking for. Test the operation of each gauge as well as the lighting of the gauges and the driver warning lights. They should all be operational.
  • Test everything in the car that’s electrical in nature: all switches, controls like headlights, turn signals, climate control system, stereo and any 12v auxiliary outlets. All should be operational. Check the visible wiring under the dashboard for brittleness and loss of flexibility.”If the water got high enough to get into the computers or modules, which are mounted under the seats, long-term they’ll start having problems as the moisture will cause a corrosion of the wires in the modules,” Bratton said.
  • Rust is another giveaway. Interior screws or bolts with visible rust indicate a water issue, Bratton explained. Also check the engine compartment and trunk for signs of rust as well. Any metal that is exposed – not painted or coated – and has been in contact with a significant amount of water will be rusted.
  • The padding underneath the carpet could be an indication as well since it tends to hold moisture for a long time. A visible water line could be another sign, but that would require pulling off the door panels.”If I suspected it was potentially water damaged I pull the carpet up and feel underneath it and see if the padding under the carpet has been replaced or if it feels wet,” Bratton said. “Normally we don’t pull carpets unless there’s a musty smell, because that’s hard to get rid of.”

Other potential signs include sand or grit or mud that seems to be embedded into any cracks, crevices or in the upholstery itself.

If you find any of these issues on a car, it has likely been flooded. We’d recommend you walk away, regardless of the potential savings, unless the car has been completely refurbished. If it has been, any reputable dealer would let you know upfront the history of the car with details on how it was restored. If they are hiding or denying any knowledge, despite the evidence to the contrary, then they simply do not deserve your business.

Finally, check out our visual guide to inspecting a car for evidence of flooding. It offers an easy checklist of tips of where to look and what to look for to help you determine if a vehicle has been involved in a flood.

New Yellow Light Study Aims at Improving Current Systems

According to a recent article published by the Insurance Journal, Hesham Rakha, the director of the Center for Sustainable Mobility at the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, hopes to change the way yellow light systems work across the country.

Rakha and his team at Virginia Tech have been studying drivers' behavior and reactions as they approach yellow lights since 2005. Their goal is to determine signal times for intersections that are safer than those currently in use, while still keeping those signals efficient and practical to use.

According to Rakha, if yellow light timing is not set correctly set at an intersection, a "dilemma zone" is created. Rakha's so-called dilemma zone occurs when the driver approaching an intersection can neither stop in time before entering an intersection, nor can they safely make it through before the light turns red. In this situation, drivers who try to implement an emergency stop increase their risk of a rear- end collision, but if they decide to go through the intersection, a collision with side street traffic could occur. The choice can be a risky gamble. The research Rakha conducted found that while only 1.4% of drivers actually cross the stop line after the light turns red, more than 20% of traffic fatalities in the U.S. occur at intersections.

According to the article, current yellow light times are set for 4.2 seconds on a 45 mph road. Rakha explains that timings are based on the assumptions that drivers require one second to perceive and react to the change in signal, and that drivers requires 3.2 seconds to stop from 45 mph at a comfortable deceleration level of 10 feet per second squared.

To test this, Rakha used Virginia's Smart Road, located at the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute. The road has signals that allow the researchers to change the length of the red, yellow, and green lights. This let Rakha and his team study driver behavior by changing the signal when a test driver is a certain distance from the intersection. The research revealed that 43% of drivers who crossed the stop line during a yellow light duration were not able to clear the intersection before the light turned red.

Rakha's research also determined that the perception-reaction times were slightly longer than one second, but that driver deceleration levels are significantly higher than the deceleration level assumed for traffic signal design. However, if road conditions are poor, drivers react 15% slower because they are processing more information, which reduces deceleration by 8%. To remedy this, the intersection would require a longer yellow light interval.

Rakha and his team developed a procedure to compute and change yellow light interval duration that can account for drives being caught in the dilemma zone. The team created tables for light vehicles at various speeds for dry and wet roads to enable traffic planners to set traffic signals that can be adjusted to road surface and weather conditions. They also created tables for driving characteristics for different age groups, since studies showed that elderly drivers were not able to react to changing signals as quickly as younger drivers were.

Beyond their tables, Rakha and his team are moving on to development of caution lights that can hopefully be used on existing traffic signal structures. These warning lights will alert drivers when a green light is about to change to yellow. This would provide drivers with longer times to react. The team also hopes to take this a step further by implementing vehicle-to-vehicle and infrastructure-to-vehicle communication that can create a warning visible on a vehicle's in-car display, which can be customized to each driver's reaction time. The goal is to provide a four- or five-second warning when approaching an intersection.

The truth behind car insurance myths

Everyone knows red cars are more expensive to insure, right? Wrong.

With the latest data from the AA revealing that the average comprehensive premium now costs £1,035.45, car insurance is a huge investment for most drivers.

Worryingly, however, there are a number of myths and misconceptions around car insurance. If you fall for one of these, you could end up overpaying for your cover or potentially invalidate your policy.

We reveal some of the most common car insurance myths.

If I don’t drive my car I don’t need insurance
Wrong. The Continuous Insurance Enforcement (CIE) law requires all registered vehicles to have insurance. It had previously only been illegal to drive uninsured, however, this law, which took effect last year requires all vehicles that are taxed to be insured, even if they are not used.

Those of you who own a car that is not insured must either take out insurance or make a Statutory Off-Road Notification (SORN) with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) – even if you don't drive it.

If I get a speeding ticket my insurance rates will go up
A number of factors come into play here. Your first minor speeding ticket may not have an affect on your insurance rate. However, the speed you were travelling and the frequency of infractions will play a role in determining your premiums.

If I have comprehensive cover I will be insured abroad
A fully comprehensive insurance policy provides the most extensive cover if you’re driving on British roads. Once you leave the UK, however, you may find your level of protection plummets significantly.

For instance, some insurers will only offer you third party cover abroad even if you are fully comprehensive in the UK. This means the company would only reimburse other people for their injuries and damaged property. Other companies will only pay out if you have provided advance warning you will be driving in another country.

Before you head off on holiday, it would be wise to check your policy’s fine print.

My insurance will be more expensive because I am a man
From 21 December this year, insurers can no longer take gender into account as a risk factor when calculating the cost of insurance cover the European Union’s top court has ruled.

Historically, young women have paid significantly less than their male counterparts for their insurance premiums because women are less likely to be involved in an accident.

As a result of this ruling, it’s likely that premiums will increase substantially for many female drivers.

If I buy a red car it will cost more to insure
Wrong. This is a common misconception. Many believe that insurers automatically associate red with youth and aggressive driving but in reality, insurance companies are colour blind.

A spokesman from the AA said that there is no statistical evidence that a red car will increase your insurance premium. Insurers decide what rate you will pay based on the vehicle's year, make, model, body type, and engine size. Other factors that come into play are your driving record, safety statistics, price, and how attractive your vehicle is to thieves.

Commercial van insurance for every business owners

Commercial van insurance for every business owners Commercial van insurance are mainly for vans or vehicles that are used for business purposes only. If you intend using your van for commercial use then commercial van insurance is what is required for that purpose.

The objective of a commercial van insurance cover is for the protection of your van with any content that may be included inside, it also covers your business against any eventualities that may occur in future. However, they usually do not come cheap thats why most prudent businesses set out for cheap van insurance policies to cut overhead.

Drastically reducing your outgoings to a minimum is a viable means for running a more lucrative business, this also includes shopping around for the best quality van insurance policy for your business vehicles that won't cost you an arm and a leg..Getting the cheapest insurance can save you money at the beginning but on the long run you could end up loosing a great deal due to the type of policy you purchased. So it's good to always be thorough when looking for the most appropriate insurance for your business otherwise yoo could end up loosing out on the best policy for your business.

There are various insurance policies out there, but the specific cover that you require could depend on various factors and criteria for you to obtain. Such factors might include the capacity of the van, age and model, period of cover and much more. Most insurance providers will certainly provide you with insurance coverage designed for private, sole trader as well as company van use along with with different grades of protection.Full comprehensive cover, third party fire and theft and third party only cover are the major insurance cover that all major insurance companies provide on a regular basis.

The fully comprehensive insurance coverage is for the protection of every eventualities perhaps that why it's the most cumbersome and most expensive policy you can buy. Comprehensive cover protects against liability for accidental deaths of any individual involved in an accident, covers against injuries sustained and also covers against damage to properties of any party.Comprehensive van insurance also covers against any damage to both you and the third party's vehicle after an accident, protects against theft, burglary, vandalism and also entitles you to a free van when your vehicle is off the road for repairs.Always make sure that if you're going to be living tools and other contents in your van, they must be covered under your policy against theft.

On the other hand, third party fire and theft policy cover would protect against any liability caused by any third party that includes vandalism, fire, theft , any accidents and of course burglary of your van.Third party fire and theft covers unlike comprehensive policy does not honour a claim if the third party to the accident isn't insured at the time of the collision. The last and final insurance cover is the third party commercial cover. Often the least expensive out of the entire three policies and also very basic or simple cover, it protects your van against damages caused to a third party only. It's so unfortunate to note that your business van cannot be covered by this policy due to it's short comings compared to more extensive policies like comprehensive and third party fire and theft cover.

However, if you're involved in a collision, you would have to pay the repair cost of the third party motorists. To fulfill your legal obligation of being legal on the road you can get a van that's worth next to nothing and take out a third party cover only . This will save you money on the long run and ensure you remain legally insured on the road. No matter how much you use your van, you can also customize it with additional add on on offer by commercial van insurance firms. Add ons like ability to drive other vans, being able to drive in other countries whilst being covered, being protected up to your legal expenses all come very handy in the course of your business operations.

IEEE Predict That 75% of Cars Will Be Autonomous By 2040

While flying cars and homes built high into the sky still seem to be out of reach for the foreseeable future, one group of experts believes that we'll see sweeping changes in the way we travel by car in the coming years. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers have made the bold prediction that 75% of the world's vehicles will be autonomous by 2040.

The group, which contains the world's largest professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for humanity, are putting their faith in the autonomous vehicle as the most promising form of intelligent transportation of the future. While it may seem like a bold prediction, one of the group's senior members, Dr. Alberto Broggi (a professor of computer engineering at the University of Parma in Italy) is already an expert on the subject. Broggi was the director of a 2010 project that enabled two driverless cars to successfully complete an 8,000-mile road trip from Parma to Shanghai, China.

When it comes to transportation, one of the more obvious hurdles that must be overcome is the need to establish and build infrastructure, which the group believes already gives autonomous cars an advantage compared to other forms of transportation. Broggi believes that autonomous cars of tomorrow could simply travel on existing roadways (with modified traffic control systems in place), sparking dramatic changes to intersections, traffic flows, and highways, which will all but end the need for drivers' licenses.

Broggi and his colleagues anticipate that driverless cars will operate by using sensors equipped in each vehicle that will allow vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication, which will mean the end for traffic lights and stop signs. Broggi believes that intersections equipped with sensors, cameras, and radar systems will monitor and control traffic flow, helping to promote more efficient traffic patterns, and help eliminate driver collisions.

Dr. Azim Eskandarian, the director of the Center for Intelligent Systems Research and IEEE member, believes that new traffic flow systems combined with more autonomous vehicles on the road will revolutionize highway travel as well. He believes that future highways will utilize their own designated lanes for autonomous and traditional vehicles, which will help minimize traffic jams, increase efficiency, and allow for faster speeds. This will enable autonomous vehicles to travel more safely than they would in traditional highway traffic, and enable the self-driving vehicles to drive faster with closer gaps between cars while platooning – having a lead car with other autonomous cars in tow. In fact, Broggi said that he believes autonomous cars should be able to safely travel at speeds up to 100 mph.

While potential benefits of using the system could truly be breakthrough, there are a number of obstacles that must be overcome before autonomous cars can become a reality. For the IEEE, the biggest roadblock will be the consumer. So far, drivers have remained hesitant to get behind the widespread adoption of driverless cars, according to the IEEE. However, the advent of new technologies, such as self-parking features, auto-brake, and lane-departure assistance systems, may help change consumers' minds as they trickle down to more affordable vehicles.

Auto Insurance Quotes Can Be Compared Online on LowCostCarsInsurance.com by High Risk Drivers

(PRWEB) December 10, 2014

LowCostCarsInsurance.com has just released a blog explaining why free car insurance quotes are beneficial for high risk drivers.

The newest blog post on LowCostCarsInsurance.com presents the main advantages that high risk drivers can have by comparing online auto insurance quotes. It points out the primal issue regarding ones driving record – if one has a bad driving record or it is categorised as a high risk driver – the auto insurance policy might be a little more expensive.

Taking into consideration the fact that the American car insurance market is very diverse, there are many companies that will insure even high risk drivers. This will also cost more since the premium rates that are charged by the company depend on the degree of risk associated with the applicant based on the driving record but also factors such as age and health.

For example, people under the age of 25 or or over 70 are considered to be high risk drivers since they are more likely to be involved in traffic accidents. If any of those person have a history of traffic felonies that aspect is is self-explanatory.

Because the American auto insurance market is so diversified, plenty of companies are willing to insure even high risk drivers. But finding an auto insurance company that can cover such a driver without charging a lot is not guaranteed.

The premiums that are charged by insurance companies depend on the degree of risk associated with an applicant based on their driving record and traffic felonies but also on other factors such as age.

Being under the age of 25 or over the age of 70 may all too likely put you into this category because, statistically, people in these age groups are more likely to be involved in traffic accidents.
