TfL online journey planner launched

Transport for London has now launched its online journey planner for delivery drivers in London during the Olympic Games. As the area will be manic for the duration of the games, delivery drivers can use the handy tool to plan routes which avoid certain no-go areas and therefore optimise efficiency during the Games. The planner shows delivery drivers the exact spots at which they can make drop offs in case of road closures and will show routes of any road events being carried out and how these will affect delivery times.

From July, the site will be refreshed every five minutes with up to date traffic information, and any issues which may affect drivers, their routes or timings. Overall, the tool will be a godsend to many freight operators, but the general advice is still to try and keep away from the area if possible as conditions will be hectic for drivers.

However, the Toyota Prius C’s price and top-of-the-line safety features make it a good option for new parents. The Prius C received “Good” ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for all crash protection tests, and the hybrid model was named a top safety pick for 2012. J.D. Cruise control, keyless entry, and other amenities are offered in the higher trim levels. The 2012 Soul has been updated with more powerful engines, 15-inch steel wheels, and wider tires. The base engine is a 1.6-liter four-cylinder that puts out 138 horsepower, while the plus version has a 2.0-liter engine rated at 164 horsepower. Budget minded shoppers will like Kia’s basic warranty, which covers the car for 60 months or 60,000 miles. New buyers also receive a powertrain warranty that covers 120 months or 100,000 miles. J.D. Power awarded the 2012 Kia Soul awards for performance and quality. Although the Kia Soul isn’t the largest vehicle on the list it’s still a great option for new parents who want a fun car that meets their needs for space and safety.

      • Base (LX FWD) MSRP: $28,620
      • MPG: 18 city/25 highway

Some motorists cringe at the mention of 'car insurance premium'. This fear is not based on the renewal time looming- but instead, how they'll pay up another monthly instalment . Over the last couple of years, motor insurance premiums has seen a sharp rise in the motoring industry. It's now become the 'norms' for drivers to search for cheap and affordable policies- in order not to experience the consequence of not having one. And no matter how expensive a policy may be, it's still a necessity- read on to find out why having a policy is vital.

Is car insurance policy a necessity?

In most countries, vehicle insurance is considered vital for every motorist. In the UK for instance, the law enforcement agencies are always on the prowl to enforce drivers have valid insurance policies for the cars they use. Two of the major benefits of having a valid cover includes:

Coverage against claims from motorists or passengers looking to exercise legal obligation against a policy holder that is the major cause of an accident in which losses and or damages occurred as a result.

It's always advisable to always be on the right side of the law- driving without a valid insurance would lead to your vehicle being impounded or you may even risk a driving ban for not adhering.

Disadvantages of having no insurance cover when driving

Driving without a valid insurance policy constitute a driving offence. These are the consequences for driving without a valid motor insurance policy:

  1. Not having a valid insurance cover on your vehicle can generate points on your licence- and if you accumulate up to 12 points, you then get disqualified from driving- which can be a severe blow when you depend on your driving job to make a living.
  2. Bans are often given to drivers without a valid insurance coverage on their vehicle, however, large fines do accompany these fines depending on the degree of the offence .
  3. Depending on the severity of a driving offence- whether being involved in an accident whilst not being insured or just being caught driving without a valid insurance, the amount of fine imposed will hugely differ in direct proportion to the severity of the offence.
  4. There have been known cases of prolific offenders doing time for the amount of damage they've caused as a result of not having a policy.

Important aspect to consider in a car insurance policy

It can be rather confusing for new and young drivers trying to buy an insurance policy for the first time. The manner in which policies are written and structured can be extremely difficult for new drivers looking to purchase a car insurance policy- more experienced drivers within the family might need to explain it to them in simpler terms. However, there are vital factors to look out for in a policy before you decide to buy. These are primary factors to consider:

  1. The 3 levels of cover you can select from includes: comprehensive, third party fire and theft and third party only.
  2. Consider the Level of excess you're comfortable with- Should incase you're involved in an accident, you'll be required to pay the excess you chose at the beginning of your policy.
  3. If your premiums are unaffordable then it's time to keep on comparing quotes until you find a cheaper and much more affordable quote.
  4. Make it a point of duty to look at the special conditions that apply to your policy to avoid getting breaching the terms of your policy which can inevitably void your policy.

Five ways to obtain low-cost quotes from insurers

Cheapest car insurance company doesn't exist when your looking for cheap car insurance premiums. There are simply too many variables affecting the price of a car insurance policy: who you are, what you do for a living, where you live, the type of car you drive and your driving history, all contribute to what insurers use to determine the amount of premium you pay for your policy. Your sole objective will now be to spot the cheapest car insurance deal possible by:

  1. Getting a car that's categorised to fall within the low insurance group. Some examples of cars within the low insurance group bracket includes: Vauxhall Corsa, Fiat Punto and Nissan Micra because of their small engine sizes. High insurance premiums are allocated to bigger engine cars while smaller engine vehicles attract lower premiums.
  2. Increasing your excess levels would decrease your premium but exercise due caution when setting your level of excess because, the amount you state on your quote form is required of you in the event of an accident. Resist the temptation of inflating it, stick with an amount you're comfortable with.
  3. Putting your motor vehicle in a secure garage at night eliminates risk of it being stolen or damaged. Keeping the risk of damage, theft and burglary to a minimum is what insurance companies prefer, so they reward drivers with lower premiums.
  4. Install security devices that minimizes the chances of the vehicle getting stolen.
  5. Shop around, compare quotes, use car insurance comparison sites like cheapcarinsurancex.org/ to compare over 110 insurance companies from selected low cost insurers.

Where to get low-cost vehicle insurance quotes

Discovering affordable premiums can some times become mission impossible. The most viable way of unlocking cheap quotes is to lower your risk factor to the bare minimum then begin to compare quotes from as many insurers as possible.

Vehicle insurance organizations do offer varied type of insurance products thereby offering different quote forms like- student motor insurance from cheapcarinsurancex, http://www.cheapcarinsurancex.org/cheap-car-insurance/short-term/pay-as-you-go, green car insurance-http://www.cheapcarinsurancex.org/cheap-car-insurance/green and so on.

Rounding up

It cost more to drive your car without adequate insurance protection than when you have a valid cover : The essence of being insured is to cover against any liability or litigation that may arise as a result of a loss or liability resulting from accident caused by the insured. Examples of risk motorists face for not having appropriate insurance cover on their vehicle includes- the risk of their cars been seized or destroyed by local authorities, fines, claims from other third parties and so on.

But driving with a valid insurance cover only gives you peace of mind because your insurer deals with any other issues that may arise as a result of you getting covered. So, be insured before you drive any vehicle on the road.

How to Live Out of Your Car

Most homeless people will tell you that there are two classes of homelessness: with car and without a car. If you are homeless, but still own a car, you may find yourself relying on it as a temporary shelter until you get back on your feet. Some cities have safe-parking programs that allow a person living in their car to park and sleep in a designated parking lot without fear of being hassled. However, more programs like this are needed if we, as a nation, genuinely wish to help the 3.5 million Americans who, according to the National Coalition of the Homeless, experience homelessness each year. Here are six tips for living out of your car if you are otherwise homeless.

  1. Find a place to park

Finding a place to discreetly park your car so that you can rest is tricky, since the laws regarding parking on private or public property and sleeping in your vehicle vary from state to state. If there is no safe-parking program in your city, church parking lots, 24-hour shopping centers, and neighborhoods where you can park not in front of a home, but in between a residential and business property, are all potentially safe and discreet places for you to park and sleep. Parking consistently in the same spot or neighborhood will draw attention, so try to locate several places where you can park on any given night.

  2. Truck stops, rest stops, and Walmart stores

For the weary traveler, a truck stop, rest stop, or a Pilot Travel Center are all safe, cost-free places to park and sleep. Chain truck and rest stops are well-lit and staffed with 24-hour security, and provide an oasis of amenities for the weary traveler, including showers and laundry facilities. Most, but not all, Walmart stores allow RVs and other vehicles to park overnight in their parking lots. Be sure to check with a store's manager in advance before parking and bedding down for the night.

  3. Using a car cover

Consider using a car cover if you are unable to park at a truck stop or Walmart. A car cover will help you to remain discreet wherever you park and provide you with the privacy you need in order to rest and sleep. However, a car cover may draw the attention of thieves, who will assume that underneath it is an expensive car. And while a car cover is helpful for additional warmth in winter weather, in the summer, it will turn the inside of your car into an oven.

  4. Keep your car clean

After a day or two of sleeping in your car, your car will start to stink. Try just barely cracking the windows before you go to sleep in order to keep the air inside fresh and circulating. Clean the interior and exterior of your car regularly, at a local car wash if you can afford it, just as you would if you were not homeless.

  5. Keep yourself clean

Keeping clean and looking presentable when you're homeless is challenging, but absolutely crucial if you hope to find or maintain a job. Truck and rest stops usually have showers for travelers, but using one will cost you $7 to $10. Public beaches, pools, or community centers are all places where you can grab a quick shower for free. Wet Ones can be a surprisingly refreshing and thorough way to clean yourself up if you don't have access to running water or a shower.

  6. Stay safe

Be smart about where you park your car; avoid sketchy neighborhoods, and try to park near or under a street lamp. While inside your car, make sure all four doors are always locked. If someone tries to break into your car unaware that you are inside asleep, you can almost always scare them off by honking your car horn.

Who annoys you most on the roads?

Cyclists, taxi drivers, elderly motorists and tractors are all ranked among the most irritating road users. But which group is the most annoying?

Do you ever get vexed behind the wheel – cursing other drivers for not knowing the Highway Code and having a total lack of common sense? Well, new research suggests Brits are a pretty irritable bunch on the roads…

Drivers over the age of 60 are the biggest source of frustration, according to research from insurance company Admiral.

Some 41% of those surveyed claimed to be irritated by elderly motorists.

Sue Longthorn, Admiral managing director, said: ‘The reason so many people find elderly motorists irritating could be because they tend to drive more carefully and are not in such a rush compared to many other road users.’

On a regional level, people in the North East, Yorkshire, Humberside, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland find taxi drivers the most annoying road users. In London, however, van drivers are regarded as the scourge of the roads.

Road user Percentage who find them irritating
Elderly motorists 41%
Taxi drivers 37%
Cyclists 36%
Van drivers 34%
Male drivers aged 17 or 18 30%
Caravanners 29%
Tractor drivers 26%
4x4 drivers 26%
Lorry drivers 21%
Motorcyclists 19%
Bus drivers 19%
Female drivers aged 17 or 18 14%
Sales reps 9%

Most annoying habits

As well as annoying road users, Admiral’s research also looked at the most irritating driving habits.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, tailgating is rated as the most irksome and gets on the nerves of 74% of drivers. Using mobile phones behind the wheel and not indicating are also high on the list of gripes.

Annoyance Percentage
Tailgating 74%
Using mobile phones 73%
Not indicating 71%
Cutting up 70%
Not paying attention 57%
Driving too slowly 54%
Not saying thank you when you give way 50%
Hogging the middle lane 49%
Speeding 32%
Racing at traffic lights and junctions 30%

Dealing with arguments on the road

If you need to stop your car following an incident, drive to a spot where there are other people around. Being in a public place could reduce the risk of a violent encounter.

While it’s tempting to retaliate if another driver makes an obscene gesture or shouts, doing so will probably just exacerbate the situation.

Also, it could be wise to keep a mobile phone in your car so you can call the police in the event of a serious dispute on the roads.

Road rage and insurance

Motorists who sustain injuries or damage to their vehicle as a result of a road rage incident may find their insurance company won’t pay out.

In fact, research carried out by Defaqto back in 2010 found that 94% of UK insurers don’t offer any cover for these types of claims.

If your own aggressive behavior contributed to the incident, a number of insurance policies carry an exclusion stipulating you won’t be covered

Furthermore, you might be unable to claim if you’re involved in a road rage incident, but don’t know the identity of your assailant.

Why Some Drivers Would Not Need Comprehensive Coverage

Choosing your coverage limits is an important part of designing a good car insurance policy, but many drivers don’t spend the time to think about which important car insurance options are right for them. While the vast majority of drivers will need to carry something like comprehensive coverage, for instance, there are some drivers that [...]

Could you be broke by next week?

Imagine you lost your income today. How long could you survive financially? For many Brits, it could be under a week.

A third of households in the UK have less than £250 in savings, according to research from HSBC. Worst still, a fifth of households don’t have any money set aside as a safety net.

This means the average family could run out of money in just five days – based on monthly expenditure of £1,669. Let’s say you started dipping into your savings on a Monday, your emergency fund would be depleted by Friday – a terrifying thought for those of us without wealthy relatives and trust funds.

Scarier still: it seems the number of families without adequate savings is on the increase. According to the research, the number of families with fewer than five days’ worth of savings has risen by three quarter of a million since last year.

But what is the reality if you lose your income? We look at how those quizzed c...

The £2,817 fortune in your attic

Can’t be bothered to clean out your attic? Perhaps the possibility of making £2,800 would motivate you.

The average UK homeowner has £2,813 of clutter going unused in their attic, according to research from the Co-operative Bank.

Common items stored away include books, children’s toys and Christmas decorations. Shockingly, 22% of people have as many as five TVs collecting dust in the loft.

However, few of us appreciate we could be sitting on a potential gold mine. When asked to estimate the value of the goods in their attic, people guessed an average of £559 – less than a fifth of the potential worth.

Surprisingly, some 30% of those surveyed wouldn’t consider parting with their clutter in order to make some cash.

James Hillon, Head of Home and Family at the Co-operative Bank said: ‘For many, just the thought of having a clear-out is a cause of worry, so much so that the term ‘hoarder disorder' has been coined to explain the scientific symptoms and medical reasons behind our hoarding habits.’

But just how would you go about making a little extra cash and break the hoarding habit?

Selling online

Although your first thought might be to opt for a well-known site such eBay or Amazon, there are plenty of alternatives so it could be worth doing your research.

Preloved is a site dedicated to selling second-hand goods and allows you to place a free ad without any listing or selling fees.

With musicMagpie, users can earn extra cash by trading in their old CDs, DVDs, games and technology.

Rather than selling your stuff in an auction, the site pays a set amount for each item – you can find out how much your goods are worth by entering the barcode or the name and model.

If you use online charity bookstore Green Metropolis, you’ll receive £3 for every book you sell – though you’ll need to cover the cost of postage yourself and this can range from 50p to £2.50.

Alternatively, you can become a charity seller and 50p or £1 of your profit for each book will be donated to a nominated charity.

Car boot sales

If you can brave the early start, you could dispose of your clutter by having a car boot sale.

Websites such as Yourbooty.co.uk and CarBootJunction contain listings of sales in your area or you could try checking the local paper to find a suitable venue.

Remember, if you want to bag a decent pitch, it could be worth turning up as early as possible to beat the competition.

Also, be prepared to haggle over price – many seasoned car booters will be in the market for a bargain and might try to put in a cheeky offer.

If your main goal is to spring clean, however, consider lowering your prices toward the end of the day if you need to get rid of excess stock.

Upcycling

This suggestion will perhaps work best for those with a creative bent or a talent for DIY.

Upcycling is the process of transforming items you no longer need into new, more useful objects.

Cutting up unwanted clothing and using it to cover stains or tears on other material is an obvious example. However, you can check out websites such as this for more tips.

Vehicle Insurance Facts To Remember Always

Introduction to car Insurance

The thought of car insurance premiums do often make motorists cringe- because of exorbitant nature that insurance for vehicles have become. Consequently, high premiums in recent years is a major determining factor. The last decade has seen the steady rise of premiums nationwide at an alarming rate that getting a cheap premium is getting more difficult by the day- without concerted efforts. No matter how pricy car insurance premiums can be- they are still vital for driving any vehicle on the road.

Why we need car insurance policy

Motor insurance policy is considered mandatory for every motorist in most countries. In the UK for instance, the law enforcement agencies are always on the prowl to enforce drivers have valid insurance policies for the cars they use. The major advantages of being adequately covered are::

Coverage against claims from motorists or passengers looking to exercise legal obligation against a policy holder that is the major cause of an accident in which losses and or damages occurred as a result.

Secondly, it is against the law in the UK to drive a vehicle without a valid insurance cover- offenders can have endorsements on their licence, get a fine, be disqualified from driving, or even imprisoned for severe and unique cases.

Risk for not having a valid insurance policy

Do not drive a vehicle which you do not have a valid insurance policy on. Below are some of the risks you face for driving without an insurance policy:

  • Endorsements are points added to your licence for breaking any of the road traffic offenses- this also not having an insurance cover to drive a particular vehicle- endorsements can also hinder one’s inability to work for an organisation that requires a clean licence.
  • It’s common for persistent offenders to get couple of months or even several years ban for not having an insurance policy on the car they drive.
  • Offenders do get minimal or massive fines which will depend on how severe the offense might be- some offence may carry up to a maximum fine of £3000 if it endangers life or property.
  • There have been known cases of prolific offenders doing time for the amount of damage they’ve caused as a result of not having a policy.

What to look out for when choosing a policy

It can easily become overwhelming for new drivers attempting to get an insurance policy for the very first time. New drivers usually find it difficult to comprehend the terms or wording of their policy document- experienced drivers would be in a better position to interpret it in a simpler language for them. Nevertheless, there are still important things to consider in a policy before even considering to buy it. Below are a few important ones to look at:

  • What level of cover would be suitable for your situation? the three basic level of cover include- third party, third party cover and theft and comprehensive policy.
  • Your level of excess is a major determining factor on your premium- the higher your excess, the lower your premium respectively
  • If your premiums are unaffordable then it’s time to keep on comparing quotes until you find a cheaper and much more affordable quote.
  • Your policy contains special conditions which you must comply with to avoid breaching any clause in the policy- for instance, does your policy allow for you to drive other cars? Does your policy cover you for driving in other European countries? Is break-down cover included in your policy?

Five ways to obtain low-cost quotes from insurers

Apparently, there is no cheapest car insurance provider. Basically, there are overwhelming variables that can influence the cost of vehicle insurance coverage: who you are, what you do for a living, where you live, the type of car you drive and your driving history, all contribute to what insurers use to determine the amount of premium you pay for your policy. You are now compelled to get the most affordable motor insurance deal possible by:

  • Acquiring a car that falls within a low insurance group. Some examples of cars within the low insurance group bracket includes: Vauxhall Corsa, Fiat Punto and Nissan Micra because of their small engine sizes. Obviously, the bigger the engine size of the vehicle the more power it generates and the higher the insurance premium.
  • Increasing your excess levels would decrease your premium but exercise due caution when setting your level of excess because, the amount you state on your quote form is required of you in the event of an accident. Stick with an amount that you are comfortable with and avoid pledging an amount you cannot pay out in the event of an accident.
  • Parking your vehicle in a garage overnight can help lower your premium. Reducing the risk for break-ins, theft, fire and criminal damage for the insurers will enable you get cheaper premiums from your insurance company.
  • Install security systems like alarms, immobilizer and even trackers.
  • Shop around, compare quotes, use car insurance comparison sites like www.cheapcarinsurancex.org/ to compare over 110 insurance companies from selected low cost insurers.

Where to get discounts for your premium

Knowing the insurance company that can offer you the cheapest quote is like finding a niddle in a haystack. Good number ways you can find discover these elusive low cost quotes will be to minimize your perceived risk factor to the insurance company and compare insurers.

There are so many insurance packages that insurance companies offer to motorist, the package you request would depend on the quote form you’re given, typical examples are: quotes for http://www.cheapcarinsurancex.org/cheap-car-insurance/student, www.cheapcarinsurancex.org/cheap-car-insurance/green + green car insurance, get pay as you go car insurance at www.cheapcarinsurancex.org/cheap-car-insurance/short-term/pay-as-you-go and many more.

Conclusion

Driving whilst under insurance protection is a lot cheaper than driving without one: The consequence of not having an insurance policy on the car you drive can be quiet costly when involved in an accident. Examples of risk motorists face for not having appropriate insurance cover on their vehicle includes- the risk of their cars been seized or destroyed by local authorities, fines, claims from other third parties and so on.

On the other hand, insuring your vehicle only gives you peace of mind and away from trouble. Always make sure you insure your car with at least the most basic level of cover before you drive on the road.

Fantastic turnout for Commercial Vehicle Show 2012

Crowds numbered over 16000 at this year’s CV Show, up by 10% on last year’s figures and an impressive feat given the current state of our economic climate, especially as many of those in attendance were buyers.

Show organisers were more than happy with such a fantastic turnout and just what the CV Show 2012 has proved about the commercial vehicle market- it remains sufficiently healthy despite the decline of other industries in the UK, defying economic uncertainty.

These figures also bode well for 2013, when the Commercial Vehicle will also be able to boast official international accreditation. All this seems to promise an even bigger and even better show for next year.
