Ford minibus to support disabled Service skiers

For the fourth year running, Ford is supporting the Combined Services Disabled Ski Team (CSDST) by providing a new Transit minibus which will help them compete in international winter sports events.

The athletes of the CSDST are a part of the registered charity which provides ski-race coaching to serving members and veterans of the Armed Forces who have a permanent disability as a result of active service. Several of the members are double amputees, but with training and an abundance of personal determination, they compete year on year in international ski competitions. The team will use the nine-seat Transit Tourneo minibus to transport themselves and their equipment around the Alps; last year alone they covered almost 30,000 miles in their bus, winning gold and bronze medals in events along the way. They’re currently aiming to represent Great Britain in the 2014 Winter Paralympics in Sochi, Russia.

Ford of Britain production manager for Transit, David Petts, said;

‘Ford is very pleased to again assist the Combined Services Disabled Ski Team. The huge amount of effort from the team’s trainers and by team members themselves is a great inspiration.’

I am writing to express my sincere appreciation and gratitude for the professional service provided to me today by Karen. She was patient, personable and proficient in solving a problem for me with regard to car insurance for my daughter. I must say that this was not the first agency we had contacted, but I am pleased to advise that it was the last. I did experience a wide range of responses from other companies, but Karen’s assistance was outstanding! We reviewed the information, she developed quotes, helped me evaluate the different options and we then closed the deal.

Small children Under The Ages Of 2 Should Always Be Kept Rear- F

This kind of discovery by the United states Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is guaranteed to increase the method fathers and mothers fasten their kids when driving a vehicle.

Contained inside a recent policy published inside the issue of April 2011 of Pediatrics, dads and moms are encouraged to place their children within a rear-facing booster seat up till the age of 2 years old or alternatively when they've reached the required height as well as weight for their specific seat. However, the AAP also emphasized the need and importance of children riding in a booster seat that are easily belt positioned for their safety until they have attained a height of four feet and nine inches and aged between eight and twelve years old.

A former publication advised on the safest way for toddlers and infants to travel in a vehicle is to be sat in a rear-facing position up to the limit of the car seat with particular emphasis on kids aged one year old and weighing up to 20 pounds as the minimum age and weight allowed. Noticeably, a huge percentage of parents were observed changing their child's car seat position to a front facing one from rear-faced position upon their babies turning one.

"Parents are optimistic about the transition of their child from one stage to the other, nonetheless, these transitions can wait until they are needed, when the child completely outgrows the limits for his or her current stage," cited Dennis Durban, MD, FAAP, lead author of policy statement as well as accompanying technical report.

"Child safety seat with rear-facing features is a lot more protective and supportive of the head, neck and spine of babies and toddlers in the event of an accident, due to the manner it distributes the entire force of the collision over the whole body." Dr Durbin reintegrated. With bigger kids, forward facing seats with harnesses are safer than booster seats, also belt positioning booster seats gives better protection than seat belts alone until the seat belts work perfectly."

Although the level of deaths caused by vehicle accidents in children up to the ages of 16 years has diminished significantly, with a 45% reduction from 1997-2009, it is undoubtedly the number one and leading cause for deaths kids aged 4 years and above. Including teens and children of up to 21 years , the total deaths for each year is more than 5,000. Number of fatalities can be staggering, for every casualty, roughly 18 kids get admitted into hospital while nothing less than 400 children are injured enough to urgently require medical treatment.

Results from research made have uncovered the truth that kids are safer in rear-facing car seats. A recent study in the journal injury prevention established that children under the ages of two years are 25% more likely to survive in a severe accident if they are riding rear-faced.

"Ages 2 suggested is not ideally a deadline but like a guide for parents to understand the right time to make the transition, Dr Durbin instigated." Smaller children will benefit from remaining rear-facing longer, while other children may reach the maximum height or weight before 2 years of age.

Children must be transitioned from a rear facing car seat to a forward facing car seat that comes with harness for optimal safety, this should continue until they reach the required height and weight. Subsequently, a booster will guarantee the vehicle's laps and shoulders are belts fit securely.

The correct positioning of the seat belt should be for it to lie across in between the shoulder and the chest rather than laying across the face or the neck- as this can be dangerous in the event of an accident . The hips and upper thighs should be secured properly with the lap belt but should not go across the belly . Booster seat will be required for most kids until they have reached 4'9" and aged between 8- 12 years old.

Children must be sat in a booster seat or an Infant car seat in the rear seat of the vehicle till they have reached 13 years of age.

An appropriate age and size restraints are still needed for children under the ages of 2 years to ride on the laps of an adult even though the Federal Aviation Authority permits kids to ride on adult's laps.

To recap, kids of all ages should ride adequately secured on every journey what ever the method of mobility, in the air or on the roads. Said Dr Durbin.

Taking safety measures for your babies and toddlers in every aspect of your child's life is very essential these days. Accidents could occur when you least expect it. Baby bath tub, baby strollers, baby monitor and baby swings are just a few of the most highly recommended products you can invest in to avoid accidents in the future.

Vehicle Insurance Facts To Remember Always

Introduction to car Insurance

The thought of car insurance premiums do often make motorists cringe- because of exorbitant nature that insurance for vehicles have become. Consequently, high premiums in recent years is a major determining factor. The last decade has seen the steady rise of premiums nationwide at an alarming rate that getting a cheap premium is getting more difficult by the day- without concerted efforts. No matter how pricy car insurance premiums can be- they are still vital for driving any vehicle on the road.

Why we need car insurance policy

Motor insurance policy is considered mandatory for every motorist in most countries. In the UK for instance, the law enforcement agencies are always on the prowl to enforce drivers have valid insurance policies for the cars they use. The major advantages of being adequately covered are::

Coverage against claims from motorists or passengers looking to exercise legal obligation against a policy holder that is the major cause of an accident in which losses and or damages occurred as a result.

Secondly, it is against the law in the UK to drive a vehicle without a valid insurance cover- offenders can have endorsements on their licence, get a fine, be disqualified from driving, or even imprisoned for severe and unique cases.

Risk for not having a valid insurance policy

Do not drive a vehicle which you do not have a valid insurance policy on. Below are some of the risks you face for driving without an insurance policy:

  • Endorsements are points added to your licence for breaking any of the road traffic offenses- this also not having an insurance cover to drive a particular vehicle- endorsements can also hinder one’s inability to work for an organisation that requires a clean licence.
  • It’s common for persistent offenders to get couple of months or even several years ban for not having an insurance policy on the car they drive.
  • Offenders do get minimal or massive fines which will depend on how severe the offense might be- some offence may carry up to a maximum fine of £3000 if it endangers life or property.
  • There have been known cases of prolific offenders doing time for the amount of damage they’ve caused as a result of not having a policy.

What to look out for when choosing a policy

It can easily become overwhelming for new drivers attempting to get an insurance policy for the very first time. New drivers usually find it difficult to comprehend the terms or wording of their policy document- experienced drivers would be in a better position to interpret it in a simpler language for them. Nevertheless, there are still important things to consider in a policy before even considering to buy it. Below are a few important ones to look at:

  • What level of cover would be suitable for your situation? the three basic level of cover include- third party, third party cover and theft and comprehensive policy.
  • Your level of excess is a major determining factor on your premium- the higher your excess, the lower your premium respectively
  • If your premiums are unaffordable then it’s time to keep on comparing quotes until you find a cheaper and much more affordable quote.
  • Your policy contains special conditions which you must comply with to avoid breaching any clause in the policy- for instance, does your policy allow for you to drive other cars? Does your policy cover you for driving in other European countries? Is break-down cover included in your policy?

Five ways to obtain low-cost quotes from insurers

Apparently, there is no cheapest car insurance provider. Basically, there are overwhelming variables that can influence the cost of vehicle insurance coverage: who you are, what you do for a living, where you live, the type of car you drive and your driving history, all contribute to what insurers use to determine the amount of premium you pay for your policy. Some examples of cars within the low insurance group bracket includes: Vauxhall Corsa, Fiat Punto and Nissan Micra because of their small engine sizes. Obviously, the bigger the engine size of the vehicle the more power it generates and the higher the insurance premium.
  • Increasing your excess levels would decrease your premium but exercise due caution when setting your level of excess because, the amount you state on your quote form is required of you in the event of an accident. Stick with an amount that you are comfortable with and avoid pledging an amount you cannot pay out in the event of an accident.
  • Parking your vehicle in a garage overnight can help lower your premium. Reducing the risk for break-ins, theft, fire and criminal damage for the insurers will enable you get cheaper premiums from your insurance company.
  • Install security systems like alarms, immobilizer and even trackers.
  • Shop around, compare quotes, use car insurance comparison sites like www.cheapcarinsurancex.org/ to compare over 110 insurance companies from selected low cost insurers.

Where to get discounts for your premium

The last and final insurance cover is the third party commercial cover. Often the least expensive out of the entire three policies and also very basic or simple cover, it protects your van against damages caused to a third party only. Third party policy cover do not often cover against business vans. So, if your involved in an accident then you will be personally responsible for the cost of repairing the third party’s vehicle.

If you have an aged van or do not feel that your van is not worth very much then you can take out a third party commercial van insurance coverage to satisfy your legal responsibility of getting your van covered.

Irrespective of the way you use your business van, you could also customize your policy with additional features and add on provided by your insurance providers, for instance, policies that offer you the benefit of driving other cars or driving abroad and most importantly legal expenses cover.

Buying a smartphone isn’t cheap, but did you know these devices could also save you money?

If you own a smartphone, you probably love the convenience of having the internet and GPS quite literally at your fingertips.

However, these devices can also be fantastic money-saving resources. Here are eight of our favourite financial apps.

1. RedLaser

You can also use the app to check stock levels and reserve items you’d like to buy.

Free

Available on iPhone, Windows Phone and Android

2. Nosey Parker

With this app, iPhone users can search for the cheapest and safest parking spaces near their current location.

Nosey Parker could be especially useful for anyone who frequently drives in busy city centres or visits areas they’re not familiar with.

£2.99

Available on iPhone

3. Vouchercloud

By using GPS technology, Vouchercloud pinpoints the vouchers and offers nearest you. Once you have found a deal, the voucher will be delivered to your mobile.

After you have downloaded the voucher, you can either use it immediately or save it for the future.

4. Wine Search

If you enjoy the occasional glass of vino, you probably know that this particular indulgence can be pretty pricey.

With this app, you can compare prices in various shops and also on restaurant wine lists.

In another interesting feature, you can also see the mark-up that the restaurant charges – which could be pretty infuriating for a frugally minded oenophile.

£1.49

5. CashPointer

Not being able to find a cashpoint can be infuriating and being charged to withdraw your own money can be even more annoying.

CashPointer allows you to search for the nearest ATMs in your area and even specify if you’re looking for a machine that doesn’t charge.

The app routes all your internet usage through its own servers, compresses the data and send it back to your phone.

Free

Available on iPhone and Android

8. British Gas meter readings

If your energy bill is based on estimated usage figures, there’s a strong chance you’re either over- or underpaying on your bills.

However, British Gas customers can submit their own, actual readings using the company’s app, which will help ensure their bills are accurate.

Free

Available on iPhone and Android

If you’re with another energy provider, it could be worth checking whether your supplier offers a similar service for smartphones.

The Hartford/MIT Determine Which Driver Aids Are Best for Older Drivers

While today's cars can come equipped with a number of driving aids ranging from "simple" sonar sensors to help judge distances from obstacles, to those that actually park your car for you, for the most part, few have been able to put a quantifiable amount to how well they work. On top of that, most of the features have only been equipped on high-end luxury cars until the past couple of years. To compound the issue, this put many high-tech features out of reach for younger buyers, only allowing mostly older drivers to afford them.

Now, enter The Hartford and the MIT AgeLab. The financial services giant, partnering with the MIT group specifically charged with conducting research to improve the quality of life for older adults, were able to determine that drivers over the age of 50 are more likely than any other age group to buy vehicles containing those modern technologies. With that figure in mind, the two conducted a study into what technologies help advance these type of driver's abilities the most. When the results were compiled, the two listed their top 10 most effective features, which goes as follows:

  1. Smart Headlights
Researchers found that headlights capable of adjusting the range and intensity of the headlamps not only reduce glare and improve night vision, but also spread light where normal headlamps can't when making turns.
  2. Emergency Response Systems
Systems including and similar to GM's OnStar offer quick assistance to drivers at the push of a button. This allows a quick response in the event of a medical emergency, or if a driver simply needs directions. In addition, these systems can also alert operators in the event of a collision, which can save precious seconds when it comes to getting first responders to the scene.
  3. Reverse Monitoring Systems
By using rear-view cameras and sonar sensors, these aids not only provide a wide angle view of what is behind the driver's car, but can also help drivers judge distances from obstacles and back up safely. Plus, the ability to see objects behind the vehicle through a monitor in the dashboard lets drivers face forward, providing a huge safety advantage for those with reduced flexibility.
  4. Blind Spot Warning Systems
This helpful system warns drivers of objects lingering in blind spots, and can also be a helpful tool for those with a limited range of motion. Drivers receive an audible and visual alert should they be at risk of a potential collision while changing lanes or parking.
  5. Lane Departure Warning
These systems take blind spot warning a step further by monitoring the vehicle's position on the road, not only providing a warning if the driver drifts out of their intended lane, but by also adjusting the vehicle's direction slightly to help keep the car where it belongs.
  6. Vehicle Stability Control
Relying on multiple sensors that detect engine speed, throttle position, wheel speed, braking force, and vehicle yaw, these systems help automatically bring your vehicle back into its intended line of travel. They are particularly effective in situations where the driver underestimates the angle of a curve or experiences a momentary loss of control during poor weather.
  7. Assistive Parking Systems
While this technology seemed next to impossible a few years ago, a number of vehicles today come equipped with systems that allow a car to park entirely by itself. This not only increases the number of places an elderly driver can park, but can also reduce driver stress as well.
  8. Voice Activated Systems
These helpful systems allow drivers to access and control just about any feature available through the car's infotainment system. Depending on the car, this can include air conditioning, phone calls, music selections, and stereo volume. This allows drivers to keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road where they belong.
  9. Crash Mitigation Systems
Also referred to as collision avoidance systems, these aids can detect when the vehicle is in danger of collision. If the system detects an impending collision, it can help minimize the impact by applying the brakes at maximum force – usually before the driver has time to react. By slowing the car, it can help reduce the likelihood of injury in a crash.
  10. Drowsy Driver AlertsThese systems monitor the degree to which a driver may or may not be paying attention. If the system detects the driver isn't at attention, it will provide feedback drivers can hear, and sometimes feel, to help them stay alert while on the road.

8 Things Your Car Needs for Winter

Meteorologists are now calling it “weird weather,” i.e. bigger, badder, totally unpredictable snowstorms, with hailstones as big as baseballs, frogs falling from the sky, etc. Winter is coming, and given the fact that year to year, the weather only seems to get crazier, it makes sense for you to take the initiative to prepare your car for “weird weather” now, rather than later.

  1. A visit to the mechanic:

Before it gets too cold, tie a bow around a six pack of manly beer, and head over to your favorite mechanic to get your car checked out. If you’re mechanic is a woman, check first to see if she prefers wine over beer. Ask your mechanic to check out your car’s battery, since cold temperatures and higher load increase the chances of a battery breakdown, antifreeze level, thermostat, and defroster.

  2. A brake check:

But you’re not done yet. Your car’s brakes need to be in optimal condition in order for you to keep your car under control on slick and snow-covered roads. Ask your mechanic for a full inspection of your car’s brakes, so you’re sure each component is checked and tested. Manufacturers recommend flushing a car’s brake system and installing new fluid every two to three years. Your car’s owner’s manual will tell you how often to do this for your particular model.

  3. A tire check:

Worn tread on your car’s tires could potentially lead to an accident or worse. Depending on where you live in the country and its potential for “weird weather,” replacing your tires with snow tires may be necessary. Once again, visit a mechanic if you need help determining the condition of your tires.

  4. Light inspection:

While driving, especially at night, falling sleet and snow can make it almost impossible for you to see or to be seen by other drivers. Schedule times throughout the winter months to check your car’s front and rear lights and confirm your flashing hazard lights are working as well.

  5. Winter windshield wiper blades:

Generally speaking, it’s a good idea to change your windshield wiper blades every six to 12 months. But of course, you may need to do this more often, depending on what part of the country you live in. To best deal with sleet and snow, instead of regular blades, purchase winter wiper blades which will wipe away ice and the white stuff much more effectively.

  6. Oil and oil filter change:

Before that first snowstorm, go ahead and change out your oil and oil filter. Clean engine oil will help your engine start when the temperature goes down to the single digits or below. The old adage that says you need to change the oil every 3,000 miles is no longer true; mechanics suggest 7,500 to 10,000 miles instead. Your owner’s manual may recommend you use specific type of oil for optimal engine operation during the winter months.

  7. A check on the engine’s belts and hoses:

Before you head over to your favorite mechanic, pop your car’s hood and take a look at the engine’s belts and hoses. If any look cracked or worn out, buy a replacement. Cold weather can be especially brutal on an already worn or cracked hose, and a replacement is not expensive.

  8. Wash and wax:

Finally, road salt will damage your car’s paint. Treat your car to a wash and wax before the weather gets too cold and the salt trucks start making their rounds. After a particularly bad storm and grueling winter drive, take time to get your car rinsed off, which will help protect its paint.

What supermarkets don’t want you to know

Discover the tricks supermarkets use to encourage you to spend more on your weekly shop.

Do you always seem to come away from the supermarket with a couple of items that weren’t on your shopping list or having spent more than you had intended when you walked into the store?

This probably isn’t an accident and, in fact, you may be doing exactly what the retailer expects of its customers.

With this in mind, we reveal five of the most common supermarket tricks.

Changing layouts

As well as being inconvenient for regular customers, changing the layout of a store is a ploy to encourage shoppers to spend more time searching for their items and probably spending more money.

While you’re traipsing through the aisles looking for a carton of semi-skimmed, you might be tempted to pick up a six-pack of your favourite lager.

Dynamic pricing

You might logically assume that supermarket chains have one price for every item that is applied across all of its stores. Unfortunately not…

Most supermarkets follow a practice known as ‘dynamic pricing’ in which they set prices according to regional trends. This means you’ll probably pay a higher price for your groceries if you live in a wealthy area than you would in other parts of the country.

The eyeline trick

Retailers often place their more expensive, branded items at customers’ eye level, while placing less costly alternatives on top and bottom shelves.

In order to boost their profits, supermarkets spend millions of pounds analysing shoppers’ behaviour and psychology. Based on this research, they know we’re much more likely to opt for items right in front of us than scour the shelves for a cheaper deal.

Dodgy price drops

Imagine you’re in a supermarket and see that an item that had been £6 has been reduced to £4.99. Clearly this is a bargain, right? Not necessarily.

Supermarkets often temporarily inflate the price of goods before putting them on ‘sale’. This way, they can advertise the new price against the previous, inflated price to give the appearance of an attractive saving.

This practice is perfectly legal. As long as the supermarket has charged the higher price for at least 28 days prior to the sale, retailers can market this as a price cut.

Does size matter?

Supermarkets are fond of telling us we’ll get better value if we buy our food in larger portions. You might therefore assume that a 1kg tub of butter will offer better value overall than a 500-gram tub.

However, it may work out cheaper to buy two smaller packs. In order to form an accurate comparison and find the most competitive deal, it’s worth comparing the price per 100 grams.

How to Live Out of Your Car

Most homeless people will tell you that there are two classes of homelessness: with car and without a car. If you are homeless, but still own a car, you may find yourself relying on it as a temporary shelter until you get back on your feet. Some cities have safe-parking programs that allow a person living in their car to park and sleep in a designated parking lot without fear of being hassled. However, more programs like this are needed if we, as a nation, genuinely wish to help the 3.5 million Americans who, according to the National Coalition of the Homeless, experience homelessness each year. Here are six tips for living out of your car if you are otherwise homeless.

  1. Find a place to park

Finding a place to discreetly park your car so that you can rest is tricky, since the laws regarding parking on private or public property and sleeping in your vehicle vary from state to state. If there is no safe-parking program in your city, church parking lots, 24-hour shopping centers, and neighborhoods where you can park not in front of a home, but in between a residential and business property, are all potentially safe and discreet places for you to park and sleep. Parking consistently in the same spot or neighborhood will draw attention, so try to locate several places where you can park on any given night.

  2. Truck stops, rest stops, and Walmart stores

For the weary traveler, a truck stop, rest stop, or a Pilot Travel Center are all safe, cost-free places to park and sleep. Chain truck and rest stops are well-lit and staffed with 24-hour security, and provide an oasis of amenities for the weary traveler, including showers and laundry facilities. Most, but not all, Walmart stores allow RVs and other vehicles to park overnight in their parking lots. Be sure to check with a store's manager in advance before parking and bedding down for the night.

  3. Using a car cover

Consider using a car cover if you are unable to park at a truck stop or Walmart. A car cover will help you to remain discreet wherever you park and provide you with the privacy you need in order to rest and sleep. However, a car cover may draw the attention of thieves, who will assume that underneath it is an expensive car. And while a car cover is helpful for additional warmth in winter weather, in the summer, it will turn the inside of your car into an oven.

  4. Keep your car clean

After a day or two of sleeping in your car, your car will start to stink. Try just barely cracking the windows before you go to sleep in order to keep the air inside fresh and circulating. Clean the interior and exterior of your car regularly, at a local car wash if you can afford it, just as you would if you were not homeless.

  5. Keep yourself clean

Keeping clean and looking presentable when you're homeless is challenging, but absolutely crucial if you hope to find or maintain a job. Truck and rest stops usually have showers for travelers, but using one will cost you $7 to $10. Public beaches, pools, or community centers are all places where you can grab a quick shower for free. Wet Ones can be a surprisingly refreshing and thorough way to clean yourself up if you don't have access to running water or a shower.

  6. Stay safe

Be smart about where you park your car; avoid sketchy neighborhoods, and try to park near or under a street lamp. While inside your car, make sure all four doors are always locked. If someone tries to break into your car unaware that you are inside asleep, you can almost always scare them off by honking your car horn.
